Romantic Rhineland Itinerary

This 7-night luxury cruise will weave you through heritage and culture aboard the breathtaking Rex Rheni, sailing you to the wonders of the Rhine and beyond. Admire history in its purest form in Castle Drachenfels and Zell; taste the wines of the region with a visit to Cochem; be enchanted by fairytale landscapes that have survived through the centuries and are waiting to meet you.

Day 1

UK to Königswinter

Travel to Königswinter and board the Rex Rheni. Remain moored in Königswinter overnight.

Day 2

Königswinter

While in Königswinter, you can travel via rack railway – the history surrounding which you’ll receive a talk about from your guide, alongside the area of Drachenfels Mountain – to the historic ruins of the 12th-century Castle Drachenfels. Once at Drachenfels, enjoy the scenic views or indulge in a sweet treat at the hill-top café.

Or, you can enjoy an alternate excursion to the birthplace of Beethoven – Bonn.

As you cruise to Koblenz in the afternoon, your ship will stop at Remagen, where you can view the remains of the Ludendorff railway bridge before continuing to sail to Koblenz.

Day 3

Koblenz

Explore the city of Koblenz in all its architectural and historic splendour, or pay a visit to the Prussian-built citadel of Festung Ehrenbreitstein on an optional excursion.

Later in the day, cruise down the scenic, vineyard-decorated Moselle to Zell.

Day 4

Zell / Bernkastel-Kues

After breakfast, your ship will set sail from the beautiful town of Zell for the vibrant Renaissance town of Bernkastel-Kues. Lifted from the pages of a fairytale, Bernkastel-Kues features stunning houses and a bustling market square complete with a 17th-century fountain, as well as many other wondrous sights you’ll get to see on the Bernkastel land train tour, including the Parish Church of St. Michael. You will have leisure time to explore the town as the Rex Rheni remains moored in Bernkastel-Kues overnight.

Day 5

Cochem / Koblenz

In the early hours of the morning, your ship will set sail for Cochem, one of the most visited locations on the Moselle River and home to the Reichsburg Castle, which you will be able to visit as an excursion. During your visit, you’ll learn of the castle’s vibrant history and view its Baroque and Renaissance furnishings. After, you’ll head into town for a short guided walk, which will lead you to a local vineyard and winery where you’ll learn about the production of wine and get to sample some.

In the evening, your ship will sail for Koblenz.

Day 6

Rüdesheim

In the morning, cruise along the scenic Rhine before reaching Rüdesheim, whereupon you can catch a land train and journey through the town before reaching the renowned Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music. Alternatively, join a wine-sampling excursion in Drosselgasse.

After, return to the Rex Rheni or enjoy a wander through Rüdesheim

Day 7

Cologne

After your morning cruise to Cologne, spend the afternoon touring the city and its many Gothic facets, including the Cologne Cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the interior of which you can explore later during your leisure time.

After, explore the mediaeval Old Town and admire its marvels and eccentricities, from churches to merchant’s houses.

Day 8

Cologne to UK

After breakfast, disembark the Rex Rheni and begin your journey to the UK.

Romantic Rhineland Cruise Review

“After travelling many of the world’s waterways – Danube, Mekong, Nile, etc. – I decided it was finally time to visit the Rhine. Honestly, I don’t know how I’ve not booked a Rhine cruise before. And with Saga, no less. The staff were always kind and friendly and I was able to enjoy delicious meals after specifying my complex dietary needs during booking. Further, the excursions were very interesting and kept me occupied for much of my holiday. The time I spent on board the ship was mostly filled with the lounge. I met lots of wonderful people there and I look forward to meeting more on my next Saga Cruise!”

Romantic Rhineland FAQ

Can you cater for specific dietary needs?

Yes we can. Any special dietary requirements and vegetarian meals can be requested when booking.

What kind of activities can we expect to be available on the Romantic Rhineland Cruise?

Given Germany’s architectural splendour, you’ll have plenty of time and excursions to discover the heights of Gothic architectonics, as well as taste wine and explore the cities and towns you’ll be stopping in. A colourful array of activities await you on the Rex Rheni, too, such as relaxing on the sun deck and having a well-earned drink in the lounge and adjoining bar.

What should I pack for my cruise?

What you pack is entirely your choice: our only advice is that you check the weather conditions of your cruise’s destinations closer to the embarkation date to ensure that you are as prepared as possible for any expected and unexpected weather conditions.
