Select sailings on the vessel River Tosca offer unique activities and adventures for younger travelers. You won’t be disappointed with the 5-star Uniworld River Cruise treatment.
This 11-night cruise explores the famous River Nile with the promise of culture, heritage, and history on every bend in the river. Enjoy expertly guided excursions, luxury accommodation, and award-winning cuisine whilst journeying amongst some of the world’s oldest and most memorable antiquities.
Arrive in Cairo and spend the day exploring Egypt’s first city. Guests can add an extra night to their cruise and discover Alexandria and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Egypt’s largest and most significant burial site. There is also an expedition to the Montazah Palace Gardens, Pompey’s Pillar, and the National Museum, plus free time to explore.
Explore the old quarter of this ancient and fascinating city. A guided excursion visits the 12th-century Citadel of Salah-al-Din, the home of Egypt’s rulers for more than seven centuries, with breathtaking views over Cairo. The tour also includes the Alabaster Mosque, with its Turkish-style interior, and the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.
Take a short flight from Cairo to Luxor, where guests have the option of a guided excursion to the UNESCO-designated Temple of Karnak, which is actually a complex of several temples and halls on a truly astounding scale with gigantic columns and magnificent stone sphinxes. Embark your vessel in the evening for a Gala Reception and dinner with a band of local dancers performing an iconic Whirling Dervish show.
Before the vessel leaves Dendera, guests can visit the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty. This temple is one of the best preserved in all of Egypt. There is also a tour of the Temple of Luxor with its distinctive pink granite obelisk. Built around 1400 BC, the temple complex is at its most mystical at sunset when the light falls, and the buildings are infused with a golden glow.
Discover the Valley of the Kings about four miles from the west bank of the Nile, where the mummified remains of the boy king, Tutankhamun, are on display. There is also an excursion to the Colossi of Memnon, giant twin statues standing eighteen metres tall and originally guarding a long dismantled mortuary temple. Another highlight is the Temple of Hatshepsut, dedicated to a female pharaoh, a rarity in ancient Egypt and also unusual as it is made of limestone instead of sandstone. Return to the vessel and enjoy a Galabeya party with traditional Egyptian music, singing, and dancing.
Guests visit the Kom Ombo Temple, unusually dedicated to two gods, the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus the Elder. The remains of 300 mummified crocodiles found in the area are displayed in the temple. Then follows a scenic cruise to Aswan, where there is the option to take a small boat trip on a bird-watching excursion. See herons, kingfishers, vultures, sunbirds, and other wildlife that thrive in the marsh grass along the riverbanks.
From the ancient to the ultra-modern, Aswan is home to the famous Aswan High Dam, a magnificent feat of engineering completed in the 1970s. The Aswan Dam has a reservoir size five times that of the Hoover Dam. Take a trip to the Unfinished Obelisk and the beautiful Philae Temple complex, moved from its original site on the Island of Philae during the construction of the dam, a project that lasted ten years. There is also a boat trip on a traditional Egyptian felucca with its iconic triangular sails, followed by afternoon tea at a colonial-era hotel with an impressive Visitor’s Book, also the filming location for Agatha Christie’s famous mystery novel, ‘Death on the Nile.’
Guests can take a short flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel, two ancient temples moved in their entirety to accommodate the construction of the Aswan Dam, a collaborative project undertaken by UNESCO and the Egyptian government. This Masterpiece Collections experience offers a guided tour of the two temples, one of the most famous sites in Egypt after the Pyramids of Giza, with their huge and instantly recognisable figures of Ramesses II and his wife, Nefertari.
Visit the ancient cultural site of the Temple of Esna with an experienced Egyptologist who will share fascinating insights into one of the greatest and last temples ever built, highlighting the façade with Egypt’s last known recorded hieroglyphic inscriptions. Located on the west bank of the Nile, the temple is a short walk from the ship. There is also an optional excursion as part of the Masterpiece Collection to see a light show in Luxor that details the history of Thebes in words, music, and illuminations. Walk in the footsteps of Egypt’s pharaohs around the Karnak Temple with a wholly immersive spectacular that finishes at the Sacred Lake.
Disembark in Luxor and then fly to Cairo. A Masterpiece Collection experience offers travellers the opportunity to tour The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) with its incredible Hall of Mummies. An expert guide brings to life the dawn of Egyptian civilisation with fascinating and educational commentary from ancient times to the present.
Explore Ancient Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the capital of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. There is a wide array of extraordinary monuments, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx at the Giza Necropolis, the largest monolith statue in the world.
Depart Cairo. Guests can extend their stay by another night and take a sightseeing expedition to Alexandria. The Masterpiece Collection experience visits the Montazah Palace Gardens, the National Museum, Pompey’s Pillar, and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Egypt’s largest and most important burial site.
