Treasures of the Main & Rhine Cruise Itinerary

This 7-night Main & Rhine Cruise takes you on a voyage to some of the most enchanting locations Germany and Amsterdam have to offer. From the whimsicality of Rothenburg and its preserved Old Town, to the picturesque canals of Amsterdam, to the scenic stretch of river in between – not to mention the spectrum of unforgettable excursions available – there’s always an adventure awaiting you aboard your AmaWaterways cruise.

Day 1

Nuremberg

Board your ship in Nuremberg and embark on your Treasures of the Main & Rhine cruise.

Day 2

Bamberg

Decide how you explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg from a choice of three excursions: you can participate in a guided walking tour and discover the mediaeval treasures Babmerg has to offer, including the Old Town Hall, Bamberg Cathedral, and an array of historic mansions. Following the walking tour will be a tasting of Bamberg’s renowned smoked beer.

Alternatively, you can skip the walking tour and go straight to the ‘Tastes of Bamberg’ excursion, wherein you will get to sample smoked beer, licorice root and the revered Hornla pastry.

Or, those seeking a more active pastime can embark on a bike tour along the scenic Main River and the quarters outwith the town centre.

Day 3

Würzburg

Enjoy a full-day excursion to Rothenburg* and its well-preserved mediaeval Old Town lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale. Or, stay in the heart of Germany’s most prominent wine producing region, Würzburg, wherein you can join a walking tour and uncover the paragons of Baroque charm in the breathtaking structures of the city. Or, indulge yourself with a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the resplendent Residenz Palace, featuring a grand fresco by Tiepolo.

Alternatively, hike up to the historic Marienberg Fortress overlooking the picturesque Main River.

*Not combinable with other tours on this day.

Day 4

Wertheim

You can join a guided walking tour of the gorgeously Gothic town centre of Wertheim, or you may choose to visit a local bakery and discover the craft of pretzel making.

Alternatively, you may wish to take part in a guided walking tour of Miltenberg, a mediaeval town wherein you’ll get to see the old market square – the Schnatterloch – and the Hotel Zum Reisen, one of the most historic inns in Germany.

If you seek an adventure with a more active kick, hike up to the Miltenberg Castles or take a bike ride through the Main River Valley.

Day 5

Rüdesheim / Rhine Gorge / Lahnstein

In Rüdesheim, you will be given a choice of three excursions. Relax on a scenic ride over the vineyards of Rüdesheim on a gondola, after which you can indulge in a wine tasting with a local vintner.

For a more active excursion, hike through a Rüdesheim vineyard or go on a bike ride through the wine region of Rheingau.

Later, sail via the picturesque Rhine River Gorge to Lahnstein, where you can partake in an exclusive visit to Burg Lahneck Castle

Day 6

Cologne

Go on an exhilarating guided tour through the Old Town of Cologne and discover the Gothic UNESCO-designated cathedral, alongside Germany’s oldest town hall – the Cologne Rathaus – alongside the Alter Markt and the Heumarkt.

Or, take to a local tavern and sample Cologne’s exclusive Kölsch beer. Passengers seeking a more active adventure can partake in a guided bike tour along the enchanting Rhine.

Day 7

Amsterdam

Go on a canal cruise and view Amsterdam in all its architectural splendour. Or, if the way to your heart is through your stomach, indulge in the ‘A Taste of Amsterdam’ excursion and sample Dutch specialties at a delightful Amsterdam café**.

*Depending on docking location, A Taste of Amsterdam may not operate; therefore, an alternative tour will operate instead.

**May be replaced with Jordaan District Walking Tour based on docking location

Day 8

Amsterdam

Bid Amsterdam a warm farewell and prepare for your flight home.

Treasures of the Main & Rhine Cruise Review

“My husband and I have travelled to Germany and the Netherlands many times before but never by cruise. After experiencing the Treasures of the Main & Rhine Cruise, we wish we’d done it sooner! Everything was spectacular and we were never left wanting, especially with the food both on and off the ship. The excursions that were made available to us were also a delight. We only wish we could’ve done them all, but we are more than happy with the ones we could fit into our schedule. We would absolutely recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to visit Amsterdam or Germany, or both!”
