City Escapes: The Seine River Cruise

This AmaWaterways sailing takes the classic Seine route between Paris, Le Havre and Rouen, but slows the pace right down, with longer port stays and a genuine choice of how to spend most afternoons rather than a fixed schedule. Cooking classes, shopping time and a hands-on pastry workshop sit alongside the more familiar Impressionist and wartime history stops, making this trip feel more like a flexible city break with a river running through it.

City Escapes: The Seine Itinerary

Sailing round trip from Paris, this cruise leans into longer stays rather than a packed schedule, room enough for a Marmottan Monet visit or a cooking class in Paris, a Norman cider tasting in Honfleur, and a full two days in Rouen for both a pastry workshop and an immersive walk through Joan of Arc’s story, without having to pick just one thing each day.

Day 1

Paris, France

Get settled aboard in the heart of Paris, with time to meet the crew, wander nearby cafés and take a short stroll along the riverbank before the week gets underway.

Day 2

Paris, France

Choose a small-group tour of the Île de la Cité and Le Marais, or see the city by bike, then spend the afternoon on whichever appeals most: the Impressionist collection at the Musée Marmottan Monet, a guided shopping outing, or a hands-on French cooking session with a chef right on board.

Day 3

Le Havre, France

A quieter day of scenic cruising as the Seine widens toward the Channel, with countryside views from the stateroom or Sun Deck and crew on hand for suggestions if you’d rather do something more structured.

Day 4

Le Havre, France

Walk the U.S. Landing Beaches with a guide, or head instead to Honfleur for its timbered harbour and a tasting of local cider and Pommeau. Le Havre’s own architecture is covered on a separate city tour later in the day.

Day 5

Rouen, France

Morning options include a medieval walking tour, a bike tour, or a Normandy food tasting, followed by an afternoon at Bonnemare Castle and its gardens or the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts. In the evening, dinner ashore at La Couronne, one of the oldest restaurants in France, rounds out the day.

Day 6

Rouen, France

Spend the morning at a Norman pastry workshop or visiting the Musée de la Corderie Vallois, then step into the immersive Jeanne d’Arc experience in the afternoon for a closer look at her trial and legacy in the city where it took place.

Day 7

Paris, France

Cruise back toward Paris as the river widens into familiar views, then take in the city after dark on a private Bateaux Parisien cruise, a quieter, more intimate way to see the bridges and landmarks than the daytime boats.

Day 8

Paris, France

Disembark in Paris.

City Escapes: The Seine Cruise Review

Two days in Rouen turned out to be the best part of the whole trip for us. We wouldn’t normally have had time for both the Jeanne d’Arc experience and a proper pastry workshop, but here we managed both without feeling rushed. Dinner at La Couronne on day five was a real highlight too, sitting in a building that old while eating that well felt like a genuine occasion rather than just another onshore dinner.

City Escapes: The Seine FAQs

Is La Couronne in Rouen really the oldest restaurant in France?

It’s usually described that way, though the claim comes with a small asterisk: it operated as an inn from 1345 before gradually becoming the restaurant it is today, so some food historians argue it doesn’t quite count as the oldest restaurant in the strictest sense. What’s not in dispute is its history, it sits on the same square where Joan of Arc was executed, and it’s where Julia Child had her first meal in France in 1948, an experience she later credited with setting her on the path to becoming a chef.

What is the immersive Jeanne d'Arc experience in Rouen?

It’s housed inside Rouen’s former Archbishop’s Palace, the actual building where both Joan of Arc’s condemnation trial in 1431 and her rehabilitation trial 25 years later took place. Rather than a traditional museum, it uses projections, staged rooms and multimedia across several floors of the medieval palace to walk visitors through her story and how her legacy has been reinterpreted over the centuries since.

What is Pommeau, tasted in Honfleur?

It’s a Normandy aperitif made by blending fresh apple juice with Calvados, the region’s apple brandy, which stops the fermentation early and leaves a drink that’s sweeter and lower in alcohol than Calvados alone. It’s typically served chilled before a meal, and it’s very much a regional speciality rather than something found much beyond Normandy and Brittany.

**What makes Château de Bonnemare worth the stop near Rouen?**

It’s a privately owned 16th-century estate rather than a grand public château, still lived in by the family who restored it, with a distinctive gatehouse flanked by two towers leading up the poplar-lined drive. Local legend has it that French kings Charles VII and Charles IX both stayed there while hunting in the area, and the estate still has its original cider house and press, since Normandy’s cider tradition runs through the property’s history as much as its architecture does. It’s the kind of place that’s easy to miss entirely if you’re not specifically pointed toward it, tucked away in the Andelle valley rather than sitting on a well-worn tourist route.

Why does this cruise spend two full days in Rouen instead of one?

Rouen carries an unusual amount of history for its size, medieval architecture, Monet’s cathedral paintings, and its central role in Joan of Arc’s story, so a single day tends to force a choice between them. Splitting the visit across two days means the morning walking tours and afternoon options on day five don’t have to compete with the pastry workshop and Jeanne d’Arc experience on day six, which is very much in keeping with this itinerary’s slower, choice-led approach generally.
