Flavors of Burgundy – Taste of Christmas
Burgundy at Christmas is a particular kind of joy, and AmaWaterways‘ Flavors of Burgundy – Taste of Christmas River Cruise makes the most of it. Seven nights down the Saône from Dijon to Lyon, or in reverse, with wine tastings from some of France’s most celebrated appellations, as well as the Hospices de Beaune’s famous mosaic-tiled roof, the grand medieval abbey at Cluny, and a festive finale in Lyon’s UNESCO-listed old town. The Saône in December is quiet and unhurried, which suits Burgundy perfectly.

Flavors of Burgundy – Taste of Christmas Itinerary
From Dijon to Lyon, the Saône passes through some of France’s finest wine country, with medieval abbeys, cobblestone market towns and vineyard-lined hills filling every day in between.
Dijon
You board in Dijon and settle in for the week.
Dijon
A full day in Dijon, with a city tour of the medieval streets and heritage buildings, a visit to Chateau d’Arcelot with its blend of historic and more whimsical architectural styles, or a guided bike tour along the Saône with views of the locks connecting the Rhône-Rhine Canal.
Seurre
The stand-out option today is the excursion to Beaune, where the mosaic-tiled roof of the Hospices de Beaune is one of the most photographed buildings in Burgundy and looks particularly vivid against a winter sky. The Art du Tonneau cooperage experience, Seurre walking tour and a Cotes de Nuits wine tasting are also available. The afternoon offers scenic cruising past Chalon-sur-Saône.
Chalon-sur-Saône
Chalon-sur-Saône can be explored on a guided historic city tour or a bike ride through its medieval streets, with a Chalonnaise wine tasting available alongside. The afternoon brings scenic cruising to Tournus, or a bike ride between the two towns for those who’d rather keep moving.
Tournus
Tournus gives you several appealing options. The city tour includes a visit to the Abbey of Saint Philibert, while the Chateau de Cormatin excursion and a walk through the medieval village of Brancion are both available as alternatives. A Mâconnais wine tasting is on offer, as is a bike tour between Tournus and Mâcon, with the day ending on a scenic cruise.
Macon
Mâcon itself is covered on a guided city tour, but the excursion to Cluny is the one worth prioritising if medieval history interests you at all: the abbey there was once the largest church in Christendom before the construction of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and the hilltop Berze-le-Chatel castle nearby adds to the drama of the day. A Mâcon bike tour is the active alternative.
Lyon
Lyon makes a fitting close to the week. The city tour takes in Fourviere Hill and the UNESCO-listed historic district, continuing through the St Jean quarter where the famous traboules wind between the tightly packed buildings. A festive tasting tour at Les Halles Market is the food lover’s option, while a Beaujolais wine tasting and a Lyon bike tour are also available.

Flavors of Burgundy – Taste of Christmas FAQs
Are flights included in the fare for this cruise?
No. This is a cruise-only itinerary. Fares are per person and cover the cruise accommodation, port charges and gratuities. Flights, transfers and accommodation before or after the cruise are not included. If you need help arranging travel to and from the ship, Crui.se can advise when you enquire.
What is the Hospices de Beaune, and why is it significant?
The Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hotel-Dieu, is a 15th-century charitable hospital in the town of Beaune, founded in 1443 to care for the poor. It is best known for its elaborately patterned polychrome tile roof, laid out in geometric diamond and chevron patterns in green, yellow, red and black. The building remains one of the finest examples of Burgundian-Flemish architecture in France. It also gives its name to the annual Hospices de Beaune wine auction, one of the most prestigious in the world, held each November.
What was Cluny Abbey, and what remains to see today?
Cluny Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in 910 in the town of Cluny in southern Burgundy. For much of the medieval period, it was the most powerful monastic institution in Europe, and its third church, completed in the 12th century, was the largest building in the Christian world until the construction of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The abbey was largely destroyed during the French Revolution, and the majority of the structure no longer stands. What remains includes one of the original transept towers and parts of the cloister, alongside a museum on the site.
Is this itinerary available in both directions?
Yes. Sailings run both from Dijon to Lyon and from Lyon to Dijon. The November 2026 departure runs from Dijon to Lyon, the December 2026 departure runs from Lyon to Dijon, and the December 2027 departure also runs from Lyon to Dijon.
What are the traboules in Lyon, and where do they appear on the itinerary?
Traboules are covered passageways that run through the tightly packed buildings of Lyon’s historic quarters, originally used by silk workers to transport goods between workshops and the river without exposure to the elements. There are around 315 of them across the city, with the highest concentration in the Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse districts. The day seven city tour passes through the St Jean quarter, where the traboules are a highlight of the route, threading between the Renaissance buildings of Lyon’s UNESCO-listed old town. Lyon’s historic centre, including its traboules, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
