Colors of Provence – Wine Cruise Itinerary

Seven nights from Lyon to Arles, following the Rhone south through Beaujolais country, Roman ruins, Hermitage vineyards and the Papal city of Avignon. The days below follow the Lyon-to-Arles direction; for Arles-to-Lyon sailings, everything simply runs the other way.

Day 1

Lyon

You board in Lyon, France’s undisputed capital of gastronomy and a city whose UNESCO-listed old town, Renaissance traboules and Michelin-starred restaurants make it a destination in its own right before the cruise even begins. The evening is yours to settle in, meet your Wine Expert and raise a glass of local Beaujolais. Want time in Lyon before you board? We can arrange a pre-cruise hotel.

Day 2

Lyon

A full day in the city, with excursion options including a guided tour of Lyon’s old town and its famous traboules, those covered passageways that thread through the historic quarters, a tour of Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, the legendary covered market named after the city’s most celebrated chef, or a bike tour of the city for those who’d rather cover ground.

Day 3

Lyon

The ship heads into Beaujolais country, and the day’s excursion takes you to Trevoux for a tasting at a local winery, with vintners on hand to walk you through the techniques behind a region known for wines as approachable as the landscape they come from.

Day 4

Vienne

Vienne is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in France, and the excursion options reflect that: a guided walking tour of the Roman relics, a hike up Mount Pipet, or a bike ride along the Via Rhona cycling route. For something more indulgent, there’s a red wine and chocolate tasting at Villa Caroube, which is as good as it sounds.

Day 5

Tournon

A day that packs in a lot. Head to Tain l’Hermitage for a tasting of the celebrated Hermitage wines from some of the Rhône’s most prestigious steep-slope vineyards, or combine a hike with a tasting for the more active option. There’s also a steam train ride through the vineyards, and in the evening an optional ghost walk through Viviers, a Renaissance village where the guides know their history and aren’t afraid to use it.

Day 6

Avignon

One of the great days on this itinerary. Avignon’s Papal Palace, the seat of seven successive popes between 1309 and 1377, is one of the most impressive medieval buildings in Europe, and a guided walking tour takes you through it and the city’s streets. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tasting excursion is the other highlight: the appellation’s name translates as ‘the pope’s new castle’ and its wines, built around Grenache and aged with some of France’s strictest rules, have been prestigious since the papacy put them on the map. A truffle farm visit and an excursion to the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct are also on offer, along with a Tastes of Avignon food tour and a bike ride.

Day 7

Arles

Arles was where Van Gogh spent more than fourteen months between 1888 and 1889, producing over 200 paintings in the Provencal light he’d come south specifically to find. A Van Gogh walking tour follows the spots where he set up his easel; a general Arles walking tour covers the city’s equally impressive Roman heritage, including a near-complete amphitheatre. Les Baux de Provence, a dramatic hilltop village in the Alpilles, is also available as an excursion, as is a bike tour.

Day 8

Arles

Disembarkation morning, with flights and transfers home included. Fancy a day or two more in Provence before heading back? We can sort the accommodation.

Colors of Provence – Wine Cruise Review

The Chateauneuf-du-Pape excursion on day six was the highlight for us, though the red wine and chocolate tasting in Vienne ran it pretty close. Our Wine Expert was Judd Finkelstein from Napa Valley, and he was brilliant and genuinely enthusiastic. Arles on the final day was something we hadn’t expected to love as much as we did, following the Van Gogh trail in the late afternoon light was special. A week very well spent.

Colors of Provence – Wine Cruise FAQs

What is Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and why is it such a big deal?

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a wine appellation in the southern Rhone Valley, about 20 kilometres north of Avignon. Its name, meaning ‘the pope’s new castle’, comes from the 14th century when the Catholic papacy relocated to Avignon (1309 to 1377) and the village became the papal summer residence. The appellation covers around 3,200 hectares and produces predominantly full-bodied red wines built around Grenache, blended with up to 18 permitted grape varieties. It was one of France’s very first AOC designations. The AmaWaterways excursion on day six takes you there for a tasting at one of the region’s wineries.

What are the traboules in Lyon, and can I explore them on the city tour?

Traboules are covered passageways that run through Lyon’s historic quarters, originally used by silk workers to transport goods between buildings and streets under shelter. There are around 315 of them in the city, most concentrated in the Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse districts. Lyon’s old town, including its traboules, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The guided city tour on day two covers the old town and the traboules as part of the excursion.

What did Van Gogh actually paint in Arles, and is there much to see today?

Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888 and stayed for more than fourteen months, producing over 200 paintings during that time, including some of his most recognisable works. He was drawn to Provence specifically for the quality of its light and the intensity of its colours. The Yellow House, where he lived and invited Gauguin to join him, was destroyed in World War II, but the Van Gogh walking tour in Arles visits the locations where he set up his easel, with panels at each site showing the painting he made there. The Fondation Vincent van Gogh in Arles holds a permanent collection responding to his legacy, though original Van Goghs are held in museums elsewhere.

Is this cruise available in both directions, and does the experience differ?

Yes, sailings run both Lyon to Arles and Arles to Lyon. The ports and excursions are the same whichever direction you sail, so the main practical consideration is which end of the itinerary you fly in and out of. Lyon has its own international airport; Arles is best accessed via Marseille or Avignon, both within easy reach. If the Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Arles days are the ones you’re most excited about, the Lyon-to-Arles direction saves them for the end of the week; the Arles-to-Lyon direction opens with them. Both airports and group transfers are included in your fly-cruise fare.

What is a Smithsonian Journeys Expert, and which sailings feature one?

Some sailings on this itinerary feature a Smithsonian Journeys Expert alongside the Wine Expert. Smithsonian Journeys is the travel programme of the Smithsonian Institution, and its experts are typically academics, curators or specialists in the history, art or culture of the regions being visited. On this itinerary, the March 2026 sailing features Bob and Louisa Lindquist of Lindquist Family Wines in a dual Wine Expert and Smithsonian Journeys role. If this is important to your booking, check the specific departure date on the AmaWaterways listing or ask us when you enquire.
