Tulip Time – Soulful Experience

This themed sailing with AmaWaterways pairs a roundtrip through the Netherlands and Belgium with a focus on canals, medieval towns and, given the late March timing, Keukenhof’s tulip fields in full bloom. It’s a longer Rhine cruise than most at nine nights, with a hotel stay in Amsterdam before boarding and a spread of excursions that go beyond the standard city tours, including a Haarlem canal cruise and a visit to the UNESCO-listed windmills at Kinderdijk.

Tulip Time – Soulful Experience Itinerary

This one starts on land before it progresses to the water, with a couple of hotel nights in Amsterdam ahead of embarkation in Haarlem. Here’s how the nine nights unfold.

Day 1

Amsterdam

Arrive in Amsterdam and check into your hotel, where the city’s canalside charm welcomes you for the first couple of nights before boarding.

Day 2

Amsterdam

Join a walking tour through Amsterdam’s streets, taking in its iconic canals, historic bridges and distinctive architecture with your guide.

Day 3

Haarlem

Sail down Haarlem’s canals on the Haarlem canal cruise, admiring historic architecture, bridges and a classic Dutch windmill, before transferring to your ship later in the day to begin your cruise.

Day 4

Bruinisse

Glide down the scenic IJsselmeer to Bruinisse before considering the Bruinisse Zierikzee city tour, an exploration of the medieval harbour town with its 16th-century Gravesteen and harbourside shops. Alternatively, you could join the Delta Works tour at Neeltje Jans to see the engineering behind the flood defences, or go on a bike tour of Bruinisse.

Day 5

Ghent

Explore Ghent’s canals and historic architecture on the Ghent walking tour, including the Castle of the Counts and St Bavo’s Cathedral, home to the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. Those with a sweet tooth can instead join the chocolate workshop, with champagne, a masterclass from a chocolatier and the chance to make your own pralines, or take the full-day Bruges excursion, strolling Grote Markt and Burg Square, visiting the Church of Our Lady and sampling fries, waffles and chocolate.

Day 6

Antwerp

Discover Antwerp on a walking tour taking in Steen Castle, the Grote Markt, the Brabo Fountain and the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of Our Lady, or see the city by bike on the Antwerp bike tour. In the afternoon, choose between a culinary tour of chocolate, waffles and beer, or a visit to the Africa Museum in Tervuren, exploring exhibits on African history, culture, music and tradition.

Day 7

Nijmegen

Spend the day in Nijmegen, the Netherlands’ oldest city. Join a walking tour through its streets and squares, try the Operation Market Garden tour for its wartime history, visit Valkhof Castle, a former imperial residence above the river, or take a scenic bike ride through the city.

Day 8

Rotterdam

Visit the UNESCO-listed windmills at Kinderdijk, either by private electric boat or by bike on the Kinderdijk bike tour. The ship then continues to Rotterdam, where you can choose the Rotterdam walking tour and Tastes of Rotterdam excursion, the Best of Delft excursion to the Royal Porcelain Factory, a Rotterdam bike tour, or a tour of Rotterdam with Delfshaven, where the Pilgrim Fathers began their journey to America.

Day 9

Amsterdam

Spend the morning on a scenic cruise into Amsterdam before boarding a smaller boat for the Amsterdam Black Heritage canal cruise, gliding beneath the city’s bridges and along its historic harbour and canals while learning about landmarks connected to Black history. Alternatively, visit the Keukenhof Gardens, where millions of tulips bloom across 70 acres in a display open only nine weeks each year.

Day 10

Amsterdam

Disembark in Amsterdam.

Tulip Time – Soulful Experience Cruise Review

“This was a really enjoyable cruise! The chocolate workshop in Ghent was a lot more hands-on than we expected, we came away with a box of pralines we’d actually made ourselves, which felt like a nice souvenir. Kinderdijk’s windmills were another highlight, especially seeing them from the water rather than just photos. Keukenhof at the end was the perfect, lighter note to finish on, we’ve never seen that many flowers in one place.”

Tulip Time – Soulful Experience FAQs

Is this cruise roundtrip, or do I need a different flight home?

It’s roundtrip. You start and end in Amsterdam, with the first two nights spent in a hotel before you transfer to the ship in Haarlem, so your flight home leaves from the same city you arrived in.

Do I need a visa for the Netherlands or Belgium?

No, UK travellers don’t need a visa for either country. Both are part of the Schengen area, so your standard 90-day visa-free allowance covers this trip. The EU is introducing a new online travel authorisation called ETIAS later in 2026, but it’s not a visa, and it hasn’t launched yet, so there’s nothing extra to apply for at the moment. Worth a quick check closer to your travel date in case that timeline shifts.

What is the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, seen in Ghent?

Also known as the Ghent Altarpiece, it’s a multi-panel painting completed in 1432 by brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, and it’s often described as the first major oil painting in Western art. It’s also, famously, the most stolen artwork in history, having been targeted more than a dozen times over the centuries, including by Napoleon and the Nazis, with one panel still missing since a theft in 1934. It’s housed today in St Bavo’s Cathedral, where it was originally painted for.

What is the Africa Museum in Tervuren, visited from Antwerp?

Formerly known as the Royal Museum for Central Africa, it was originally built by King Leopold II in the late 19th century as a showcase for his colonial project in the Congo. It closed for renovation in 2013 and reopened in 2018 with a very different aim: presenting African history, culture and the colonial past through a more critical, decolonised lens. It remains a subject of ongoing debate in Belgium about how museums should handle colonial-era collections, which is part of what makes a visit there so thought-provoking.

What is Operation Market Garden?

It was a large Allied airborne operation in September 1944 during the Second World War, aimed at securing a series of bridges through the Netherlands, including the one at Nijmegen, to open a route into Germany. The operation fell short of its ultimate objective at Arnhem, and it’s the events at Nijmegen specifically that this excursion focuses on.
