Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps – Christmas Day Celebration Cruise Itinerary
Seven nights from Amsterdam to Basel, heading south through the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland with Christmas markets, castle visits and the Rhine Gorge along the way.
Amsterdam (EMBARK)
You board in Amsterdam and settle in for the week.
Amsterdam
A full day based in Amsterdam, with a canal cruise taking in the city’s 165 canals among the excursion options, alongside scenic cruising as the ship begins to head south later in the day.
Cologne
A guided walking tour of Cologne’s old town, with free time to browse the city’s Christmas markets, which feature 160 wooden pavilions. There’s also a guided bike ride along the Rhine and through the historic Stadtgarten for those who’d rather keep moving.
Rudesheim
The ship sails the UNESCO-designated Rhine Gorge before arriving in Rudesheim. Excursion options include a wine tasting with free time at the Christmas market, a gondola ride to the Niederwalddenkmal with Christmas market time, a guided bike tour of the Rheingau, or a vineyard hike. Later in the day, visit Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet or try Rudesheimer Coffee, the local speciality made ceremoniously with brandy, coffee and whipped cream.
Ludwigshafen
Four excursion choices today. A tour of Heidelberg, the perfectly preserved medieval city in the Neckar River Valley, includes the iconic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle, the Great Vat and Christmas market time. The Heidelberg Philosopher’s Path hike offers panoramic views of the city. Alternatively, visit Speyer, one of Germany’s oldest cities, whose Romanesque cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with its medieval Old Gate and Christmas markets. There’s also a bike tour to Ladenburg.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg’s UNESCO-listed La Petite France district and the Notre Dame Cathedral with its famous astronomical clock are the highlights of the guided walking tour, which includes free time at the Christmas markets. Alternatively, take a guided bike tour through the city and Parc de l’Orangerie.
Basel
The final day in Basel offers the most varied choice of the week. A city tour on foot takes in the medieval town hall, decorated market square and 18th-century patrician homes, with Christmas market time included. A Three Countries bike tour crosses into France and Germany as well as Switzerland. The full-day Lucerne excursion takes you to the city’s medieval towers and the Chapel Bridge, one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe, though note that it can’t be combined with any other excursion on this day. For those not doing Lucerne, the afternoon options include a Swiss wine tasting at a local winery, a tour of Wildegg Castle (a Habsburg fortress from the early 13th century with a 3,300 square metre garden), a hike to the castle, or a stroll through Basel’s Christmas markets.
Basel (DISEMBARK)
Disembarkation in Basel, with flights and transfers home included in your fare.

Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps – Christmas Day Celebration FAQs
How old is the Strasbourg Christmas market, and what makes it different from the others on this itinerary?
The Strasbourg Christkindelsmarkt, held annually around the Notre Dame Cathedral and Place Broglie, has been running since 1570, making it the oldest Christmas market in France. The Cologne market on day three features 160 wooden pavilions in the old town. Heidelberg and Speyer both have markets on day five. Rudesheim’s market is on day four. Basel’s Christmas markets close out the week on day seven. Each has its own character, but Strasbourg’s combination of the UNESCO La Petite France quarter, the cathedral backdrop and a market with over four centuries of tradition makes it one of the highlights of the route.
What is the Lucerne excursion on day seven, and why can't it be combined with other tours?
The full-day Lucerne excursion takes you from Basel to Lucerne for a tour of the city, including its medieval towers and the Chapel Bridge, one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe. Because it takes the full day, AmaWaterways flags that it can’t be combined with the other Basel excursions offered on the same day, including the city tour, Swiss wine tasting, Wildegg Castle and the bike tour. If you want to see both Basel and Lucerne, a pre- or post-cruise night in Basel would give you the flexibility to do both at your own pace.
What is the Rhine Gorge, and when does the ship sail through it?
The Middle Rhine Valley, commonly called the Rhine Gorge, is a 65-kilometre stretch of the river between Bingen and Koblenz, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It’s home to more than 40 medieval castles and fortresses on the hillsides above the river, making it one of the most dramatic stretches of inland waterway in Europe. On this itinerary, the scenic cruise through the gorge takes place on day four, on the way to Rudesheim. Staying on deck for the transit is well worth it.
Do I need a visa for any of the countries on this itinerary?
No. The itinerary covers the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland, and UK citizens don’t need a visa for any of them. The Netherlands, Germany and France are all Schengen Area members; Switzerland has its own bilateral arrangement with the UK. For Schengen countries, UK citizens can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. From 2025, UK travellers need to register with ETIAS before entering Schengen countries. It’s a quick online process, not a visa application.
What is Wildegg Castle, and is it worth choosing over the other Basel afternoon options?
Wildegg Castle is a Habsburg fortress in the canton of Aargau, around 30 kilometres from Basel, built in the early 13th century. According to the source itinerary, it features a 3,300 square metre garden. It’s offered as an afternoon excursion option on day seven for those not taking the full-day Lucerne tour. The alternative afternoon options are a Swiss wine tasting at a local winery, a hike to the castle, or free time at Basel’s Christmas markets. Which you choose will depend on whether you’d rather be indoors or outdoors, and how much market time you’ve had by that point in the week.
