Rhine & Moselle Delights – Wine Cruise

Ten nights gives this AmaWaterways itinerary room to properly cover two rivers rather than one, crossing between the Rhine and the Moselle between Basel and Amsterdam, with wine tastings threaded through nearly every stop along the way. It’s a longer, slower version of the usual Rhine sailing, with a proper detour into the Moselle Valley’s smaller wine towns before rejoining the Rhine toward the Netherlands.

Rhine & Moselle Delights – Wine Cruise Itinerary

Ten nights between Basel and Amsterdam leave plenty of room for both the Rhine’s grand stretches and the Moselle’s smaller wine villages.

Day 1

Basel, Switzerland

Board your ship in Basel and get settled in for the journey ahead, with a welcome dinner to mark the first evening.

Day 2

Breisach, Germany

Breisach opens up a few different directions: a step back into the 16th century in the walled village of Riquewihr, complete with its Dolder Gate, paired with a winery visit, or a trip out to Freiburg, founded in 1120, to see the spire of its Gothic Münster followed by its own tasting. For something more energetic, hike through the Kaiserstuhl’s volcanic vineyard hills or cycle through the wine country around Breisach itself.

Day 3

Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg’s Petite France district, all timber-framed houses and narrow canals, is UNESCO-listed for good reason, and it’s yours to explore on foot or by bike, the cycling route taking in the Parc de l’Orangerie. The afternoon brings a dedicated Alsatian wine tasting to round out the stop.

Day 4

Ludwigshafen, Germany

Choose between Heidelberg’s castle and old streets, the Baroque grandeur of Mannheim Palace, the gardens at Schwetzingen Palace, or a hike along the Philosopher’s Path for sweeping views over Heidelberg. By afternoon, the ship has reached Rüdesheim, where Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet and its collection of self-playing devices, or a traditional Rüdesheimer coffee, are both on offer.

Day 5

Rüdesheim, Germany

Rüdesheim continues with a gondola ride up to the Niederwalddenkmal paired with a Riesling tasting, a hike through the surrounding vineyards, or a bike ride along the Rhine out to Schloss Johannisberg. The ship then passes through the dramatic cliffs and castles of the Rhine Gorge.

Day 6

Bernkastel, Germany

This small Moselle Valley wine town rewards a wander through its colourful Old Town, capped off with a tasting of local Moselle wines, or you can hike up to the ruins of Landshut Castle or cycle along the riverbank instead.

Day 7

Wasserbillig, Luxembourg

From Wasserbillig, head into Trier, sometimes called the Rome of the North, to explore its Roman ruins and UNESCO sites, or take a guided hike up Petrisberg Hill for views over the surrounding area.

Day 8

Cochem, Germany

Reichsburg Castle anchors the day here, either as a guided tour paired with a walk through Cochem’s cobbled streets, or as a standalone hike up to the castle itself, with a Moselle bike tour as a third option for those who’d rather stay on the water’s edge.

Day 9

Cologne, Germany

Cologne’s Old Town walking tour takes in the Rathaus, the Fischmarkt and the Great St Martin Church, finishing with a Kölsch tasting in a traditional tavern, or explore the city and the Stadtgarten by bike instead.

Day 10

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam offers a canal cruise followed by a visit to the Begijnhof’s medieval courtyard, or a food-focused walk past the canals and gabled houses, sampling Dutch specialities along the way.

Day 11

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Disembark in Amsterdam.

Rhine & Moselle Delights – Wine Cruise Review

Ten nights sounded like a lot when we booked, but it meant we actually got to slow down in places a typical week-long cruise would have rushed through. Bernkastel was a genuine highlight, far quieter and prettier than we expected, and the detour to Schloss Johannisberg on the bike tour turned out to be one of the best afternoons of the whole trip. Trier’s Roman gate was a surprise too, we hadn’t realised Germany had ruins that old.

Rhine & Moselle Delights – Wine Cruise FAQs

Is this cruise one-way or roundtrip?

It’s one-way. This itinerary only sails from Basel to Amsterdam, with no reverse option currently offered, so it’s worth booking your flight home from Amsterdam rather than back to Basel.

Do I need a visa for France, Germany, Switzerland or the Netherlands?

No, UK travellers don’t need a visa for any of these four countries. All of them, including Switzerland, are part of the Schengen area, so your standard 90-day visa-free allowance covers the whole trip. The EU is introducing a new online travel authorisation called ETIAS later in 2026, but it’s not a visa, and it hasn’t launched yet, so there’s nothing extra required to travel right now. Worth a quick check closer to your departure date in case that’s changed by the time you sail.

What currency will I need on this cruise?

France, Germany and the Netherlands all use the euro, so that covers most of the trip. Switzerland is the exception: despite being part of Schengen, it isn’t in the EU and uses the Swiss franc instead, so it’s worth having some on hand for your day in Basel.

Why is Trier sometimes called the Rome of the North?

Trier is Germany’s oldest city, founded by the Romans and later serving as one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire under Diocletian’s reforms. Its Porta Nigra, a massive city gate built around 170 CE from roughly 7,000 sandstone blocks, is the best-preserved Roman gate anywhere north of the Alps, and it’s just one part of a wider UNESCO World Heritage listing that includes Roman baths, a bridge and an amphitheatre scattered across the modern city.

What makes Schloss Johannisberg significant for Riesling specifically?

It’s widely credited as the world’s first winery to dedicate itself entirely to Riesling, planting close to 300,000 vines after a 1720 decision to grow nothing else. The estate, whose vineyard history stretches back to 817, is also credited with pioneering the late-harvest Spätlese style after a delayed 18th-century harvest turned out unexpectedly well, a happy accident that eventually led to related styles like Auslese and Eiswein as well.
