Magical Christmas Markets of Germany
Germany invented the Christmas market, and this itinerary makes a strong case for the country still doing it best. AmaWaterways‘ Magical Christmas Markets of Germany River Cruise sails the Rhine and Main for seven nights between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, calling at cities where the markets have been running for centuries and where the timber-framed squares, mulled wine and gingerbread feel entirely at home in the winter cold. Bamberg’s UNESCO old town, Wurzburg’s Baroque Residenz Palace, the UNESCO Rhine Gorge and an evening stroll through Koblenz all feature, and the week ends in Frankfurt with one of Germany’s largest and most celebrated Christmas markets filling the Romerberg square.

Magical Christmas Markets of Germany Cruise Itinerary
Seven nights between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, with a Christmas market waiting in almost every port.
Nuremberg (EMBARK)
You board in Nuremberg and settle in for the week. The evening is yours to get your bearings and take in your first taste of the Bavarian Christmas atmosphere.
Bamberg
Bamberg’s UNESCO-listed medieval lanes, grand cathedral and iconic Old Town Hall above the Regnitz make for a genuinely impressive day ashore, and the Christmas market here adds real warmth to the atmosphere. A guided walking tour takes it all in, with time at the market included. If you’d rather spend the day tasting, the Tastes of Bamberg tour covers local specialities including smoked beer and traditional pastries. A guided bike ride is the active option.
Wurzburg
Wurzburg delivers on several fronts today. The walking tour includes the Baroque old town and its Christmas market. The UNESCO-listed Residenz Palace visit, home to Tiepolo’s celebrated ceiling fresco, is the standout for anyone interested in Baroque architecture. Those who’d like to venture further afield can take the excursion to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany’s best-preserved walled town, which has its own Christmas market and cobbled streets that look as though they were designed for December. A castle hike is also available.
Wertheim
Wertheim is a smaller, quieter stop and all the better for it. Discover the half-timbered old town and Christmas market before you learn the craft of pretzel-making at a local bakery. You could also hike up to the hilltop castle or take a bike tour through the Main River Valley.
Rudesheim
A gondola ride above the Rheingau vineyards with a wine tasting is the most scenic way to start the day, though the vineyard hike and the Rheingau bike tour are strong alternatives. Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet is available for those who’d rather explore the town. The afternoon brings scenic cruising through the UNESCO Rhine Gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and castle-topped hillsides, before an evening stroll through Koblenz.
Mainz
Try a guided tour of Mainz’s old town with a visit to the Gutenberg Museum to see original 15th-century Bibles. The Christmas market here has been running for centuries and sits in front of the city’s thousand-year-old cathedral. For something different, there’s an excursion to Wiesbaden and its Christmas market, or a bike tour.
Frankfurt
Frankfurt brings the week to a proper close. The city tour covers its mix of skyscrapers, historic squares and cultural landmarks before heading to the Christmas market in the Romerberg, one of Germany’s largest and most celebrated. Food lovers will want to consider the Kleinmarkthalle food hall visit and tasting, while the Main River bike tour is there for those who want to close the week on two wheels.

Magical Christmas Markets of Germany Cruise Review
Magical Christmas Markets of Germany FAQs
Is this itinerary available in both directions, and does that affect the experience?
Yes. Sailings run both Nuremberg to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Nuremberg, with six departures across November and December 2027. The main practical difference is your arrival and departure airports, and which end of the itinerary you experience first. If Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is the market you’re most excited about, the Nuremberg-to-Frankfurt direction opens with it.
What makes Germany's Christmas markets different from those in other countries?
Germany’s markets are widely considered the oldest and most deeply rooted in Europe, with traditions dating back to the late Middle Ages in cities like Nuremberg and Frankfurt. Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt has been held in the city’s main square since at least the 17th century, and the customs around it, including the Christkind opening ceremony, are specific to the city rather than generic seasonal decoration. Each market on this itinerary has its own character: Bamberg’s is intimate and set against a UNESCO medieval backdrop, Rothenburg’s suits the walled town it sits in, and Frankfurt’s is one of the largest in the country. The cumulative effect of visiting several in a single week is quite something.
What food and drink should I look out for on this itinerary?
Each port brings its own specialities. In Bamberg, the Tastes of Bamberg excursion on day two covers smoked beer and traditional pastries. In Wertheim on day four, the pretzel-making workshop at a local bakery is a hands-on way to engage with one of Germany’s most enduring food traditions. In Rudesheim on day five, the gondola excursion includes a regional wine tasting from the Rheingau vineyards. Frankfurt on day seven has the Kleinmarkthalle food hall visit, one of the city’s most celebrated covered markets, with a tasting included.
What is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and is the day trip from Wurzburg worth doing?
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a medieval walled town in Bavaria, widely regarded as Germany’s best-preserved example of a walled town from that period. Its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses and intact town walls look much as they would have in the 16th century. The Christmas market there has a strong reputation, set against the medieval architecture in a way that few markets in Germany can match. The day trip is offered as an alternative to staying in Wurzburg on day three, so you’d be choosing between Rothenburg’s atmosphere and Wurzburg’s Residenz Palace and its own market. Both are excellent options.
Do I need a visa to travel to Germany as a UK citizen?
No. UK citizens can visit Germany without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. From 2025, UK travellers need to register with ETIAS before entering Schengen countries, Germany included.
