Enchanting Rhine – Beer Cruise
The beer-focused Rhine cruise just got even better. AmaWaterways‘ Enchanting Rhine Celebration of Beer River Cruise adds a dedicated Beer Expert to the seven-night Basel-to-Amsterdam route on the Rhine, sailing with you for the full week to lead tastings, brewery visits and conversations about what you’re actually drinking at each stop. The itinerary itself covers Alsatian ales in Breisach, the Rhine Gorge and Burg Lahneck, Kolsch in Cologne, Altbier in Düsseldorf, and a beer tasting in Utrecht or Amsterdam to close. With an expert alongside you from day one, it all lands differently.

Enchanting Rhine – Beer Cruise Itinerary
Basel to Amsterdam in seven nights, with a Beer Expert on board to make sure every tasting means something. Here’s what each day looks like.
Basel
Board in Basel and begin your Enchanting Rhine Celebration of Beer River Cruise.
Breisach
The obvious choice for day two is the Brasserie Artisanale St. Alphonse beer tasting with a master brewer visit, which sets the tone nicely for the week ahead. If you’d rather start with the scenery, a walking tour of medieval Colmar is the more cultural option, while the Kaiserstuhl volcanic vineyard hike and the Breisach wine country bike tour suit those who want to be outdoors.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg offers the UNESCO-listed La Petite France quarter and Notre Dame Cathedral on the guided city tour, an Alsatian beer tasting for those who want to keep the theme going, or a bike tour through the city for a more active morning.
Ludwigshafen
Four excursion options from Ludwigshafen: a tour of Heidelberg with its red sandstone castle and medieval streets, the Philosopher’s Hike above the city for the views, a tour of Speyer, or a bike ride along the Neckar to Ladenburg. Later, the ship moves to Rudesheim, where Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet and Rudesheimer Coffee are both available.
Rüdesheim
A good day for variety. The gondola ride and wine tasting is a popular option, with views over the Rheingau vineyards that are hard to match. For something more active, consider the vineyard hike or the guided Rheingau bike tour. The afternoon brings scenic cruising through the UNESCO Rhine Gorge, and the day ends at Lahnstein with a choice between a tasting at Lahnsteiner Brauerei or an exclusive visit to Burg Lahneck Castle.
Monheim
Cologne and Düsseldorf in a single day, with beer at both ends. In Cologne, choose a half-day or full-day walking tour of the old town, with Kolsch tastings included. In Düsseldorf, a walking tour of the old town comes with an Altbier tasting, or there’s a guided bike tour for a more active afternoon. Your Beer Expert will have opinions on both cities’ offerings, and they won’t hold back.
Amsterdam
The final day brings Utrecht and Amsterdam, with options including a walking tour of Utrecht, a beer tasting, a canal cruise in Amsterdam or a Taste of Amsterdam food and drink tour. Note that AmaWaterways advises the day seven programme may be substituted with an alternative depending on docking conditions.
Amsterdam
Disembark in Amsterdam.

Enchanting Rhine – Beer Cruise FAQs
Who are the Beer Experts on this itinerary, and what do they do on board?
The August 2027 sailing features Christian Kazakoff, Head Brewer at Canyon Club Brewery in the Bay Area, with 27 years of brewing experience. He has expanded the brewery’s production from under 400 barrels to over 1,100 annually and has a background in culinary arts, which shapes how he thinks about beer and food pairing. The November 2027 sailing features Sam Corbeil, Head Brewmaster and founding team member of Sawdust City Brewing Company. He trained at Berlin’s VLB brewing institute, has created over 300 beers, has taught brewing at Niagara College and has previously hosted beer-focused river cruises with brewery tours and tastings. Both experts sail for the full seven nights, leading tastings, guiding brewery visits and providing context at each port.
What is the difference between Kolsch and Altbier, and why do Cologne and Düsseldorf each have their own?
Both are top-fermented ales, which makes them unusual in a country that largely switched to lager in the 19th century. Kolsch is pale, clean and lightly fruity, served in a small straight glass called a Stange, and has been protected by EU geographical designation since 1986, meaning it can only be brewed in Cologne. Altbier, from Düsseldorf, is amber to copper in colour, maltier and with a firmer bitterness; its name means ‘old beer’, a reference to the traditional top-fermented style. The rivalry between the two cities and their beers is long-standing and genuine. On day six of this itinerary you get to try both, which is the most satisfying way to form a view.
What is Burg Lahneck, and is it worth choosing over the Lahnsteiner Brauerei tasting?
Burg Lahneck is a medieval castle above the confluence of the Rhine and Lahn rivers at Lahnstein, originally built in the 13th century to protect nearby silver mines. The AmaWaterways visit is exclusive to guests on this itinerary. Lahnsteiner Brauerei is a local brewery with a tasting available on the same day. Both are solid options; the brewery fits the theme of the cruise more naturally, but the castle views over the gorge are hard to argue against. If your Beer Expert has a preference, it’s worth asking.
How does this cruise differ from the standard beer cruise?
Other beer-centric cruises provided by AmaWaterways may have a similar itinerary, ports, or excursions, but they lack a dedicated Beer Expert on board. This Enchanting Rhine Celebration of Beer cruise adds a named expert for the full seven nights, giving the brewery visits and tastings a level of guided depth that the standard itinerary doesn’t have. If you want to do a Rhine beer cruise and get the most out of every tasting, this is the version to book.
Do I need a visa for the countries on this itinerary?
No. The itinerary covers Switzerland, Germany, France and the Netherlands, and UK citizens don’t need a visa for any of them. Germany, France and the Netherlands are Schengen Area members; Switzerland has its own bilateral arrangement with the UK. From 2025, UK travellers heading to Schengen countries need to register with ETIAS before travel.
