Christmas Markets on the Rhine – Wine Cruise Itinerary
Sailing from Basel to Amsterdam, the week takes in a Freiburg market visit, a bike ride out to Ladenburg, and a visit to Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet in Rüdesheim, before a last morning wandering Utrecht ahead of Amsterdam. Below is how it all comes together.
Basel, Switzerland
Board your ship in Basel and settle into the week ahead, with a toast to mark the start of the journey.
Breisach, Germany
Wander Colmar’s half-timbered streets and Christmas markets under festive garlands, or head instead to Freiburg for its own Christmas market. A Breisach bike tour is on offer too, for a more active look at the surrounding countryside.
Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik, dating back to 1570, is the oldest Christmas market in France, and it sits alongside the UNESCO-listed lanes of La Petite France. Explore them both or join a guided bike tour. The day ends in Gengenbach, where advent windows glow along the town hall façade.
Ludwigshafen, Germany
Choose Heidelberg’s Old Town and Christmas market, historic Speyer and its Christmas markets, the Philosopher’s Path hike for panoramic views, or a bike ride out to Ladenburg. The ship then reaches Rüdesheim, where a wine tasting and a traditional Rüdesheimer coffee, blended with brandy and whipped cream, are both on offer.
Ludwigshafen, Germany
The ship glides through the Rhine Gorge, castles lining the hills on either side, before arriving in Rüdesheim for Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet and its own Christmas market, a gondola ride over the vineyards, a hike, or a bike tour of the Rheingau. Enjoy some scenic cruising before the day finishes in Lahnstein with an exclusive tour of Burg Lahneck.
Cologne, Germany
Sail into Düsseldorf and spend the afternoon in nearby Cologne, exploring its Christmas market beneath the Gothic cathedral, or stay in Düsseldorf for an Altbier tasting alongside its own festive stalls. A guided bike tour is also on offer.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Begin in Utrecht with a festive walking tour or a beer tasting, then cruise into Amsterdam, taking in the canals before the Taste of Amsterdam tour brings you to one of the city’s grand cafés and its local delicacies.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Disembark in Amsterdam.

Christmas Markets on the Rhine – Wine Cruise Review
Christmas Markets on the Rhine – Wine Cruise FAQs
Is Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik really the oldest Christmas market in France?
Yes, it’s generally recognised as the oldest documented Christmas market in France, with records tracing it back to 1570, and it’s often cited among the oldest in Europe too. It grew out of an earlier Saint Nicholas market that was banned during the Reformation for venerating saints, and it settled into its current main location on Place Broglie in 1871, though the market has since spread across a dozen or so squares throughout the city.
What makes Gengenbach's advent calendar the largest in the world?
Since 1996, the town’s Baroque-era town hall has had all 24 of its windows turned into a giant advent calendar, one revealed each evening from late November through Christmas Eve, with a different artist commissioned to design the artwork each year. Past contributors have included Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol. It’s widely credited as the largest advent calendar in the world, and the nightly unveiling draws a crowd that gathers below to watch each window’s curtain go up at 6pm.
What's the difference between Kölsch and Altbier, tasted in Cologne and Düsseldorf?
Both are local specialities from cities just 25 miles apart, and there’s a long-standing rivalry between them. Kölsch is pale, light and served in small, narrow glasses in Cologne, while Altbier is darker and maltier, closer to a traditional ale, and Düsseldorf drinkers tend to be just as loyal to it as Cologne is to Kölsch. Ordering the wrong one in either city is unlikely to cause real offence, but it’s a good conversation starter with any local bartender.
What's actually in a Rüdesheimer coffee, and why is it served with ceremony?
It’s built around Asbach brandy, a German brandy specific to the Rüdesheim area, warmed and ignited before being mixed with coffee and topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. The drink is usually prepared tableside using a special two-handled cup, developed in the 1950s specifically to serve it, and the small performance of lighting the brandy is very much part of the tradition rather than just theatre for tourists.
What is Burg Lahneck, visited exclusively near Rüdesheim?
It’s a 13th-century castle built by the Archbishop of Mainz to guard a nearby silver mine, perched where the Lahn river meets the Rhine. Local legend ties it to the Knights Templar, said to have made a last stand there in 1312, though historians treat that story as folklore rather than fact, and the writer Goethe was inspired to write a poem about the castle after seeing it on his own travels down the Rhine.
