Captivating Rhine – Taste of Christmas
Seven nights from Amsterdam to Basel, heading south along the Rhine through some of Europe’s most celebrated Christmas market territory. Düsseldorf and Cologne on day three, Rüdesheim and the UNESCO Rhine Gorge on day four, Heidelberg or Speyer on day five, Strasbourg on day six and the Alsatian medieval streets of Colmar on day seven, all before disembarking in Basel at the Swiss border on day eight.
With AmaWaterways, the festive framing goes beyond the markets: the ship is decorated for the season, and the itinerary leans into regional winter flavours at each stop, from Rudesheimer coffee and wine tastings on the Rhine to mulled wine in Düsseldorf and Alsatian atmosphere in Strasbourg and Colmar.

Captivating Rhine – Taste of Christmas Itinerary
Seven nights from Amsterdam to Basel, taking in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland. Here’s how the week plays out.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
You board in Amsterdam to begin your journey along the Rhine.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
A second day based in Amsterdam, with excursion options including a canal cruise, a walking tour, a beer tasting tour, or a visit to Slot Zuylen, a castle first built around 1250 that has been shaped by generations of subsequent owners and architectural changes into a layered mix of styles. Its gardens offer a quieter counterpoint to the main house.
Düsseldorf, Germany
A guided walking tour of Düsseldorf with a mulled wine tasting, or a walking tour of nearby Cologne taking in the old town, the historic Cologne Rathaus, the 12th-century Fishmarkt and the Great St Martin Church.
Rudesheim, Germany
The ship sails through the UNESCO-designated Rhine Gorge before arriving in Rudesheim. Excursion options include a wine tasting at the town’s vineyards, a gondola ride, a vineyard hike, or a guided bike tour of the Rheingau. Later in the day, visit Siegfried’s Mechanical Instrument Cabinet or try a Rudesheimer coffee, made with brandy, coffee and whipped cream.
Ludwigshafen, Germany
Four options from Ludwigshafen: a tour of Heidelberg and its red sandstone castle, the Philosopher’s Path hike above the city, a tour of the Romanesque cathedral city of Speyer, or a bike ride along the Neckar to Ladenburg.
Strasbourg, France
A walking tour of the UNESCO-listed La Petite France district and the Notre Dame Cathedral with its famous astronomical clock, or a bike tour through the city and Parc de l’Orangerie.
Breisach, Germany
A walking tour of the 16th-century Alsatian streets of Colmar, including a glimpse of the small replica of the Statue of Liberty, a hike through the volcanic Kaiserstuhl region, or a bike tour through the wine country around Breisach.
Basel, Switzerland
Disembark in Basel.

Captivating Rhine – Taste of Christmas Cruise Review
Captivating Rhine – Taste of Christmas FAQs
What is Slot Zuylen, and is it worth choosing over the other Amsterdam excursions?
Slot Zuylen is a castle near Utrecht, first built around 1250 and modified significantly in the mid-17th century, with further changes over the following centuries that have layered different architectural styles through its rooms and corridors. The AmaWaterways source description notes that beyond the castle itself, the gardens offer a quieter and more peaceful retreat. It’s offered on day two as an alternative to the Amsterdam canal cruise, walking tour and beer tasting. If you’ve already spent time in Amsterdam on day one and want something different, Slot Zuylen is worth considering.
What is Colmar, and how does it differ from Strasbourg?
Colmar is a town in Alsace, around 70 kilometres south of Strasbourg, and both appear on this itinerary. The main difference is scale and character. Strasbourg is a city, the capital of the Alsace region, with a UNESCO-listed La Petite France quarter and a Gothic cathedral. Colmar is smaller, its 16th-century old town is exceptionally well preserved, and its half-timbered streets feel more like a film set than most places you’ll visit. Strasbourg features on day six and Colmar on day seven, with Breisach as the ship’s docking point for the Colmar excursion.
Why does the itinerary dock at Ludwigshafen on day five when the excursions go to Heidelberg and Speyer?
Ludwigshafen is a city on the Rhine directly opposite Mannheim, and the port’s central location makes it a practical base for excursions across the surrounding region. Heidelberg is around 20 kilometres from Ludwigshafen, and Speyer is around 25 kilometres. Ladenburg, the destination for the bike tour option, is also nearby. This arrangement of docking at one point and excursioning to neighbouring cities is common on Rhine itineraries, where the most interesting destinations sit slightly off the main river corridor.
Is this cruise suitable for first-time river cruisers?
It’s a good choice for a first trip. The Amsterdam-to-Basel direction means every day brings a new destination, the excursion range at each port includes gentle walking tours alongside active hikes and bike rides, and the Christmas market theme gives each day a clear focus without requiring much planning on the guest’s part. The ships on this itinerary carry between 156 and 162 passengers, keeping things personal without feeling too intimate.
Do I need visas for the countries on this itinerary?
The itinerary covers the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, and UK citizens don’t need a visa for any of them. The Netherlands, Germany and France are Schengen Area members; Switzerland has its own bilateral arrangement with the UK. From 2025, UK travellers need to register with ETIAS before entering Schengen countries. It’s a quick online process, not a visa application.
