Taste of Bordeaux (Smithsonian Journeys)
Bordeaux is one of those destinations where the more you know, the better it gets. AmaWaterways‘ Taste of Bordeaux – Smithsonian Journeys River Cruise builds that principle into the entire itinerary, pairing seven nights on the Dordogne and Garonne with a Smithsonian Journeys Expert on board for every sailing. The exclusive excursions that come with that partnership are genuinely exceptional: access to the Pair-non-Pair Caves, whose engravings date back around 32,000 years and which were the first cave art site to be classified as a French historical monument; a private tour of Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve, held by only four families since its founding, where the owner meets guests personally; and a Smithsonian exclusive visit to Bergerac and its Maison du Vin.

Taste of Bordeaux (Smithsonian Journeys) Itinerary
A roundtrip from Bordeaux, heading out through Saint-Emilion and Bergerac wine country before returning via Blaye, the Medoc and Cadillac.
Bordeaux
You board in Bordeaux and set sail on the Dordogne, with the evening to settle in and get acquainted with your fellow guests.
Libourne
Libourne is the gateway to Saint-Emilion, and both excursion options today put you in the heart of the vineyards. The Saint-Emilion excursion takes you through the UNESCO-listed limestone-carved village, while the bike tour follows the vineyard-clad countryside around it. Either way, this is some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated wine country.
Libourne
Four options today, and the Smithsonian exclusive Bergerac excursion is worth prioritising. The tour visits the Tobacco Museum and the Maison du Vin, which tells the story of Bergerac’s wine culture in considerable depth. Those staying closer to Libourne can visit a bastide town and market to sample local specialities, discover a historic watermill and traditional breadmaking, or hike through a vineyard with a wine and tapas tasting at Chateau Boutinet.
Blaye
Blaye’s day opens with a choice between its historic citadel and two bike tour options: the Chemin de Fer route along the riverbanks and medieval villages, or the longer Blaye to Bourg route. History lovers should make a strong case for the Smithsonian exclusive Pair-non-Pair Caves visit, one of the oldest decorated caves in Europe whose engravings date back around 32,000 years and were the first cave art site to be classified as a French historical monument. Those heading to Bourg have the option of a walking tour taking in the Carriage Museum and a WWII petrol cistern, or the exclusive Bourg Wine Festival.
Medoc region
A day in the Medoc, with a hike through the vineyards at Cussac Fort and a wine tasting.
Cadillac
The Smithsonian exclusive excursion to Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve is the standout option today. Held by only four families since its founding, the chateau is still owned by a private family who meets guests personally and opens rooms containing original furnishings, including those connected to Henri IV and Queen Margot. The alternative options are a visit to Roquetaillade Castle combined with a Cadillac town visit, or a bike tour through the area.
Bordeaux
Back in Bordeaux for a final full day. The Smithsonian exclusive option is a city tour combined with a visit to the Musee d’Aquitaine, one of the most significant regional history museums in France. Other options include a UNESCO city tour with a market tasting, a visit to the Bassins de Lumieres digital art museum, a Cite du Vin visit, or a bike tour of the city.
Bordeaux
Disembark in Bordeaux.

Taste of Bordeaux (Smithsonian Journeys) FAQs
Who are the Smithsonian Journeys Experts on this itinerary?
The October 2026 sailing features two experts. Dr. Maria Fadiman is a cultural and environmental geographer and professor at Florida Atlantic University, with extensive fieldwork experience across Latin America, Africa, Europe, Oceania and Asia. April Nowell is an award-winning Palaeolithic archaeologist and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Victoria, specialising in cave art and Palaeolithic sites.
What are the Pair-non-Pair Caves, and what makes them significant?
The Pair-non-Pair cave, located in the Gironde department north of Bordeaux, contains parietal engravings dating back around 32,000 years, from the Aurignacian period of the Upper Palaeolithic. It was the third decorated cave ever discovered, after Altamira in Spain and the Chabot cave in Ardeche, and in 1901 became the first cave to be classified as a historical monument in France. The engravings depict horses, ibexes, deer, mammoths and cattle, as well as a megaloceros, an exceptionally rare subject in prehistoric art. The excursion on day four is a Smithsonian exclusive guided visit.
What is the Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve, and what does the exclusive visit involve?
Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve has been held by only four families since its founding and is still privately owned. The Smithsonian exclusive excursion on day six involves meeting the owner personally and being shown rooms containing original furnishings, including those associated with Henri IV and Queen Margot. This level of private access is what distinguishes it from a standard chateau visit.
What is the Bassins de Lumieres in Bordeaux?
The Bassins de Lumieres is a digital art museum housed in a former submarine base in Bordeaux, one of the largest digital art centres in the world. It projects large-scale immersive artworks across the walls, ceilings and pools of the base’s vast concrete chambers.
Do I need a visa to visit France as a UK citizen?
No. UK citizens can visit France without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as France is a Schengen Area member. From 2025, UK travellers need to register with ETIAS before entering Schengen countries.
