Romantic Danube – Celebration of Beer
Bavaria’s brewing culture gets the spotlight from the very first afternoon on this AmaWaterways sailing down the Danube, running from Vilshofen to Budapest across Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. A guest master brewer travels on this particular departure too, so the tastings dotted through the week come with real professional insight rather than just a pour and a pairing note.

Romantic Danube – Celebration of Beer Itinerary
Sailing from Vilshofen to Budapest, brewing traditions and tastings run through nearly every stop on this one, alongside the usual castles and old towns.
Vilshofen, Germany
Board your ship in Vilshofen, then head straight into an exclusive Oktoberfest celebration that afternoon, with traditional beer, pretzels, and Bavarian folk music and dancing to kick things off.
Passau, Germany
Start underground with a tour through Vilshofen’s historic BierUnterwelten beer tunnels and a tasting of German Pilsner, before the ship continues to Passau, known as the City of Three Rivers. Once there, choose a guided walking tour of the city, a hike up to the Veste Oberhaus on Castle Hill, or the River Inn bike tour.
Linz, Austria
Linz opens up a bigger choice: a full-day trip to Salzburg for its UNESCO-listed Old Town paired with a Hefeweizen tasting, or a full day in Český Krumlov, wandering its Baroque and Renaissance streets before touring Krumlov Castle. Prefer to stay closer to the ship? There’s a walking tour through Linz’s old centre past the Mozart House, or a bike ride along the Cultural Mile and the Danube.
Weissenkirchen, Austria
The ship glides through the Strudengau and the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley on the way to Weissenkirchen, with options once you arrive including a walking tour of Dürnstein paired with a visit to Melk Abbey, a hike up to the ruins of Dürnstein Fortress, or a bike tour through the valley. The day wraps up with an evening wine tasting at a local winery.
Vienna, Austria
Spend the morning on the Imperial Vienna walking tour, taking in the Opera House, the former Imperial Palace and St Stephen’s Cathedral, or cover the same ground by bike instead. The afternoon is left free, whether that means more exploring or time back on board.
Bratislava, Slovakia
Bratislava offers three directions: a walking tour through the Coronation City to learn about its royal history, a visit to a monastic brewery for a cellar tour and tastings of light and dark lagers, or a more active hike up to Bratislava Castle for views over the city.
Budapest, Hungary
Spend the morning on the Buda side, touring the Castle District with Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, or take the more active Castle Hill hike instead. In the afternoon, a guided tour of Pest takes in the Hungarian Parliament Building, Heroes’ Square and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial.
Budapest, Hungary
After a leisurely breakfast on board, disembark in Budapest and prepare for your journey home.

Romantic Danube – Celebration of Beer FAQs
What makes Hefeweizen, tasted in Salzburg, different from the Pilsner and lagers elsewhere on this trip?
Hefeweizen is a wheat beer rather than a barley-based one, brewed with at least 50% malted wheat alongside barley, which gives it that distinctive cloudy, pale gold appearance. Unlike the Pilsner you’ll try in Vilshofen or the lagers in Bratislava, it’s unfiltered, left with the yeast still in the glass, which is exactly what “hefe” means in German. The banana and clove notes people often pick up in it come from the specific strain of yeast used, not from any actual fruit or spice, so tasting all three styles across the week gives a genuinely different picture of German-speaking Europe’s brewing range rather than just more of the same beer in different towns.
What currency will I need across these four countries?
Germany, Austria and Slovakia all use the euro, so that covers most of the week. Hungary is the exception, since it uses the forint, so it’s worth carrying a little local cash for your day in Budapest, even though some places will accept euros.
Who is the beer expert joining this sailing?
The 4 November 2026 departure travels with Chris Gonzalez, a master brewer with over a decade of experience, including a role as Director of Brewing Operations at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company. He’ll be leading tastings and sharing insight into the beers you’re sampling throughout the week.
Why does Vilshofen have a museum dedicated to beer tunnels?
Vilshofen is the hometown of Josef Groll, the brewmaster who left for Pilsen in 1842 and ended up creating the world’s first Pilsner there, a beer style that went on to define most of what people now think of as ordinary lager. The BierUnterwelten museum, built into a rediscovered medieval cellar system beneath the town, tells his story alongside Vilshofen’s own 700-year brewing history, and includes a stretch of tunnel that had been forgotten about entirely until it was rediscovered in 2014.
What is the monastic brewery visited in Bratislava?
It’s a small brewery built into the cellar of a 17th-century Baroque monastery, still brewing a traditional pilsner-style beer using old-fashioned methods and unfiltered, unpasteurised techniques. The cellar itself is the real draw beyond the beer: vaulted stone ceilings that have barely changed since the building’s monastic days, now home to bubbling fermentation tanks instead of monks.
