Legendary Danube (Christmas Time)
This one covers some serious ground. AmaWaterways‘ Legendary Danube – Taste of Christmas River Cruise takes you from Nuremberg along the Danube all the way to Budapest, crossing the Continental Divide via the extraordinary Main-Danube Canal and stopping in some of Central Europe’s most rewarding cities along the way: Regensburg’s UNESCO-listed medieval centre; Passau, where three rivers converge; Vienna, where the Habsburgs left their mark on practically every street corner; and Budapest, split in two by the river and stitched back together by some of the most recognisable bridges in the world.

Legendary Danube – Christmas Time Cruise Itinerary
Seven nights from Nuremberg to Budapest, with the Main-Danube Canal crossing and the Wachau Valley among the highlights before you even reach the Austrian and Hungarian capitals.
Nuremberg
Board your ship in Nuremberg and settle in for the journey ahead.
Nuremberg
A full day in Nuremberg before the ship heads south. Ashore, your options include a guided tour of the beautifully preserved medieval centre, including the Imperial Castle and the city walls; a more focused look at the city’s WWII history with visits to the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds, the Nuremberg Trials Memorial and Courtroom 600 (when available); or a Tastes of Franconia food tour sampling Nuremberger Bratwurst, red beer and gingerbread. Back on board, the ship begins its passage through the Main-Danube Canal, an extraordinary feat of engineering that connects two of Europe’s great river systems across the Continental Divide.
Regensburg
One of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities, with options to join a guided walking tour of the Old Town, a Tastes of Bavaria tour covering Bavarian beer, sausage and pretzels, or a bike ride out to Walhalla.
Passau
Known as the City of Three Rivers, where the Inn and Ilz meet the Danube, Passau makes for a memorable arrival by water. Options include a guided walking tour of the city, a hike up to Veste Oberhaus (Passau’s hilltop castle), a River Inn bike tour, or a full-day excursion to Salzburg.
Melk / Wachau Valley
The day starts with excursion options at Melk: a guided tour of Melk Abbey, its Baroque architecture and historic collections, or a hike up to the abbey for those who’d rather earn the view. Alternatively, stroll through the cobblestone streets of Dürnstein and see its famed Baroque church tower, or try a Danube bike tour. Later, the ship sails through the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley, with its vineyard-covered hillsides and historic villages, before arriving in Vienna.
Vienna
Vienna gets a full day, and it needs it. A morning walking tour takes in the Opera House, the former Imperial Palace and St Stephen’s Cathedral, or you can join a guided bike tour of the city instead. The afternoon brings a visit to the UNESCO-listed Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, the Habsburgs’ grand summer residence, or free time to explore the city at your own pace.
Budapest
Budapest gives you both sides of the city. Start on the Buda side with a guided tour of the Castle District, including Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, or a hike up Castle Hill for the views. The afternoon moves to Pest for a guided tour past the Hungarian Parliament Building, Heroes’ Square and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial.
Budapest
Disembark in the morning and begin your journey home.

Legendary Danube (Christmas Time) FAQs
What is the Main-Danube Canal, and what's it like to sail through it?
The Main-Danube Canal is a 171-kilometre waterway in Bavaria that connects the Main River (and through it the Rhine) to the Danube, creating a navigable route between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Completed in 1992 after decades of construction, it passes through 16 locks that lift and lower the ship across the Continental Divide, reaching a high point of 406 metres above sea level. That makes it the highest point on earth that a commercial vessel can reach from the sea. Watching the ship work its way through the locks is one of the more memorable parts of the journey, and staying on deck for the transit is well worth it.
Do I need a visa to visit Germany, Austria and Hungary?
No visa is required for UK citizens visiting any of the three countries on this itinerary. Germany, Austria and Hungary are all Schengen Area members, and UK citizens can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen zone as a whole. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your trip. From 2025, UK travellers need to register with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) before entering Schengen countries.
What should I look out for to eat and drink on this itinerary?
Each country on this itinerary brings something worth seeking out. In Nuremberg, the Franconian food tour on day two covers the city’s famous small Bratwurst (a protected regional speciality), red beer and gingerbread. Regensburg has a long beer garden tradition; the Historische Wurstküche beside the Danube, which has been serving Bratwurst since the 12th century, is worth a visit if you have time. Vienna is a coffeehouse city, and sitting in one of the grand old Kaffeehäuser with a Wiener Melange and a slice of Apfelstrudel is as much a part of the experience as any guided tour. In Budapest, the Great Market Hall in Pest is the place to find Hungarian paprika, salami and langos.
What is Walhalla, and is the bike tour to see it worth doing?
Walhalla is a neoclassical memorial above the Danube near Regensburg, commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and opened in 1842. Designed in the style of the Parthenon, it houses over 130 marble busts and 65 plaques honouring figures from Germanic history, from ancient rulers to scientists, artists and writers, including Beethoven, Einstein and Sophie Scholl. The views over the Danube from the hilltop site are exceptional. The AmaWaterways excursion on day three gets there by bike, which is a flat, scenic ride along the river. If cycling isn’t your preference, a walking tour of Regensburg’s old town is the alternative.
Is this itinerary suitable for first-time river cruisers?
It’s a good one to start with. The one-way format from Nuremberg to Budapest means each day brings a genuinely new destination rather than a round trip that revisits the same stretch of river. The range of excursion options at each port, from gentle walking tours to active hikes and bike rides, means you can pitch the activity level wherever suits you.
