City Escapes: The Danube River Cruise

This AmaWaterways sailing takes the same Danube route between Budapest and Vilshofen as the classic itineraries, but hands over more of the decision-making, especially in Vienna and Linz, where the day is built almost entirely around your own interests rather than a fixed plan. Vienna gets a full two days here rather than the usual one, with everything from waltz lessons to an underground lake on offer alongside the standard palaces and museums.

City Escapes: The Danube Itinerary

This cruise runs in both directions between Budapest and Vilshofen, and with extra room built in for Vienna, there’s time to actually enjoy the city rather than tick it off, whether that’s a proper waltz lesson or a boat ride across an underground lake most visitors never even hear about. Here’s the route heading west from Budapest.

Day 1

Budapest, Hungary

Board your ship in Budapest and settle in for the week ahead.

Day 2

Budapest, Hungary

See the city from above, either with a tour of the Castle District or a hike up Gellért Hill, both giving a good sense of the layout of Buda and Pest before the cruise gets properly underway.

Day 3

Bratislava, Slovakia

A guided walk through Bratislava’s old centre pairs naturally with a regional beer tasting, or trade the tasting for a hike up to Bratislava Castle and its views over the city instead.

Day 4

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is yours to shape today. Start with either the Imperial Vienna tour or a bike ride through the city, then choose your afternoon: a waltz lesson with a local instructor, time in an art museum, or a trip out to Burg Liechtenstein for a boat ride across the largest underground lake in Europe. The day closes with dinner and a concert on shore.

Day 5

Vienna, Austria

A quieter day of scenic cruising through the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley awaits you, with the ship’s own amenities on hand for however you’d rather spend the time.

Day 6

Linz, Austria

Linz offers a museum pass so you can pick whichever gallery suits your own interests, or head further afield: a full day in Salzburg with the choice of Hohensalzburg Fortress or Red Bull Hangar-7, or a full day in Český Krumlov with a local beer tasting included.

Day 7

Passau, Germany

Passau’s setting at the meeting point of three rivers makes for a scenic wander through its old lanes, whether that means a guided walk with a local tasting or a visit to a traditional pretzel bakery.

Day 8

Vilshofen, Germany

Disembark in Vilshofen.

City Escapes: The Danube Cruise Review

We’d never really thought about visiting Bratislava before this cruise, and the beer tasting there after the walking tour turned out to be a proper highlight, a nice change from the wine tastings we’re used to on these trips. Linz gave us a similar surprise, skipping the full-day excursions in favour of the museum pass meant we got to spend a slower afternoon exploring a gallery we picked ourselves, rather than following a group timetable. Passau’s pretzel bakery rounded things off nicely too, a small, simple stop that ended up being one of our favourite memories.

City Escapes: The Danube FAQs

What is the underground lake near Burg Liechtenstein?

It’s the Seegrotte, a former gypsum mine near Vienna that flooded in 1912 and is now billed as the largest underground lake in Europe, with boat rides across its still, emerald-green water.

Why is Hohensalzburg Fortress worth the visit if I choose Salzburg over Český Krumlov?

It’s one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, built from 1077 and expanded steadily over the following centuries, and despite its size, it was never actually taken by force in battle. It sits directly above Salzburg’s old town, reachable by funicular, and its scale alone, spread across tens of thousands of square metres, makes it a genuinely different kind of stop from the smaller town squares elsewhere on this cruise.

What's the history behind the Citadella on Gellért Hill?

The Habsburgs built it in the early 1850s after crushing the 1848–49 Hungarian revolution, positioned to face the city rather than away from it, making its purpose control rather than defence. The Liberty Statue standing beside it today was erected in 1947 to mark Hungary’s liberation from Nazi occupation, and unlike most monuments from that era, it survived the fall of communism largely unchanged, even as its official meaning shifted over the decades since.

Why does this cruise offer waltz classes in Vienna?

The waltz is about as closely tied to Vienna as any tradition gets, popularised across Europe in the early 19th century partly through the Congress of Vienna in 1814–15, when the city’s ballrooms became almost as important as its negotiating tables. Composers like Johann Strauss II later cemented the connection, and the tradition is still very much alive today through Vienna’s famous ball season, so a lesson here is less a novelty add-on than a genuine piece of local culture.

**What’s inside Red Bull Hangar-7, the alternative to Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg?**

It’s a striking glass-and-steel dome at Salzburg Airport, built for Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz and opened in 2003, housing his personal collection of historic aircraft known as the Flying Bulls. Everything on display, from WWII-era fighters to a Douglas DC-6, is kept fully airworthy rather than sitting as static museum pieces, and the collection sits alongside a rotation of championship-winning Red Bull Racing Formula 1 cars.
