Best of the Danube – Celebration of Music

Music runs through this AmaWaterways cruise in a way most Danube itineraries don’t attempt. Sailing round trip from Budapest along the Danube, you’ll take in Bratislava, Melk and two full days in Vienna, with choir performances, onshore concerts and composer trails woven into the regular sightseeing. Select sailings are also hosted by guest conductors and musicians, so depending on when you travel, there’s a good chance you’ll be sharing the ship with genuine working professionals from the classical music world.

Best of the Danube – Celebration of Music Itinerary

This cruise loops out from Budapest and back again, with two nights in Vienna at its centre. Here’s what to expect.

Day 1

Budapest, Hungary

Check out of your hotel and board your ship in Budapest, with time to explore the city independently before evening briefings, cocktail hour and dinner on board.

Day 2

Bratislava, Slovakia

Spend a leisurely morning cruising before arriving in Bratislava, the Coronation City of Kings. Choose a walking tour of its historic sites, with surprise musical performances along the way, or the Tastes of Slovakia culinary tour. More active options include a hike up to Bratislava Castle for panoramic views, or a guided bike tour of the city.

Day 3

Melk, Austria

Spend the morning taking in the scenery of Austria’s UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, then arrive in Melk to visit Melk Abbey, a Baroque monastery founded in the 11th century and perched above the Danube. The visit takes in a museum, a historic library of medieval manuscripts, frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger, and finishes with a live choir performance.

Day 4

Linz, Austria

Choose from several excursions in Linz: a stroll through the old city centre past the Mozart House and old market, or a guided bike tour of the city. For a full-day option, Salzburg brings its historic centre, Mirabell Gardens, Residenz Square, the Old Market and Mozart’s Birth House. Guests not joining the Salzburg trip can instead spend the afternoon in Český Krumlov, wandering its cobblestone streets and touring Krumlov Castle.

Day 5

Vienna, Austria

Spend a leisurely morning cruising and enjoying the river scenery as it unfolds around you. In the afternoon, choose a horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna’s historic centre with a costumed coachman, or a guided bike tour along the Danube Canal and the Ringstrasse. The day ends with an onshore concert in the city.

Day 6

Vienna, Austria

Trace the footsteps of Vienna’s great composers, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert among them, visiting their former residences, museums and monuments, and stop by the interactive House of Music, where you can feel sound waves and conduct a virtual performance of the Vienna Philharmonic. There’s also the option of visiting Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, or a hike through the Vienna Woods at Cobenzl.

Day 7

Budapest, Hungary

Begin in Buda, exploring the Castle District with Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, or try the more active Castle Hill hike. In the afternoon, choose a classical music tour taking in the Hungarian State Opera House and the Franz Liszt Memorial Museum, or a tour of Pest’s landmarks, including the Parliament Building, Heroes’ Square and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial. In the evening, take in the city’s illuminated skyline from the Sun Deck or on a stroll.

Day 8

Budapest, Hungary

Disembark in Budapest.

Best of the Danube – Celebration of Music Review

We booked this one specifically for the music theme and it didn’t disappoint. The choir performance at Melk Abbey was unexpectedly moving and the House of Music in Vienna was great fun, my husband is still telling people about his turn conducting the Philharmonic. The onshore concert in Vienna was the perfect way to end that day too.

Best of the Danube – Celebration of Music FAQs

Is this cruise roundtrip, or do I need a different flight home?

It’s roundtrip. You board and disembark in Budapest, so your flight home leaves from the same city you arrived in, and every sailing follows the same loop.

What does the "Celebration of Music" theme actually involve?

Alongside the regular sightseeing, this itinerary weaves in music-focused moments like the choir performance at Melk Abbey and an onshore concert in Vienna. Select departures also travel with a guest conductor, musician or vocalist on board as a host, so depending on your sailing date, you may find yourself sharing the ship with a working professional from the classical music world rather than just visiting music-themed sights.

What currency will I need across these three countries?

Austria and Slovakia both use the euro, so that covers most of the week. Hungary is the exception, since it uses the forint, so it’s worth carrying a little local cash for your days in Budapest, even though some places will accept euros.

On Day 4 in Linz, can I visit both Salzburg and Český Krumlov?

No, they’re offered as alternatives rather than a package, since Salzburg is a full-day trip in one direction and Český Krumlov is offered specifically to guests who aren’t doing the Salzburg excursion. You’ll need to pick one or the other for this stop.

What is the House of Music in Vienna?

It’s an interactive sound museum spread across several floors of a historic building that once belonged to Otto Nicolai, founder of the Vienna Philharmonic. Alongside exhibits on the physics of sound and the lives of Vienna’s great composers, its best-known feature is the Virtual Conductor, where you step onto a podium and lead a virtual performance of the Vienna Philharmonic yourself.
