Day 1

Vienna

Travel to Vienna and embark your luxury cruise ship, Spirit of the Danube.

Day 2

Vienna, Austria to Bratislava, Slovakia

From one legendary capital to another not quite so well known, Bratislava is the fourth largest city on the Danube and a food lover’s paradise. Easily accessed on foot, visit the Gothic-style Cathedral and the historic castle with bird’s eye views of the city.

Day 3

Budapest, Hungary

A city of two halves, Buda and Pest straddle opposing sides of the Danube River. Although united since 1873, they retain very different characters. Buda is older and more historic, with medieval architecture and Buda Castle, a contrast to the 19th-century streets of Pest.

Day 4

Esztergom, Hungary

Situated in a picturesque location on the Danube Bend, Esztergom is home to Hungary’s largest basilica, a stunning Neoclassical masterpiece, and the country’s largest church. Visit the ancient castle with its informative and educational museum.

Day 5

Wachau Valley to Melk, Austria

Enjoy the picturesque landscape of the Wachau Valley, one of the most scenic sections of the Danube, before arriving in the historic city of Melk. The jewel in the crown is the 900-year-old Abbey, sitting above the town and a testament to Baroque architecture.

Day 6

Passau, Germany

Located at the confluence of the Danube, Ilz, and Inn Rivers, this charming and cultured city is surrounded by wooded hills providing a scenic backdrop. Guests enjoy a walking tour that includes the Bishop’s Palaces and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Day 7

Linz, Austria

Famous for Linzer torte, reputedly the world’s oldest cake recipe, guests have a chance to sample some on a tour of this diverse city. Baroque architecture interleaves with contemporary buildings. There is a creative arts scene and several modern museums.

Day 8

Wachau Valley, Dürnstein, Vienna, Austria

Enjoy another scenic sailing through the Wachau Valley to Dürnstein and explore the ruins of the 12th-century Kuenringer Castle, the prison of Richard the Lionheart. This historic town features medieval lanes and ancient city gates. Later, sail to Vienna.

Day 9

Vienna, Austria

Enjoy an excursion around one of Europe’s finest capitals, including the Ringstrasse, the legendary Opera House, and the Spanish Riding School. Guests can take advantage of a complementary shuttle service to explore the city in the afternoon.

Day 10

Vienna, Austria

Disembark Spirit of the Danube and transfer to Vienna International Airport for flights back to the UK.

Autumn Colours of the Danube: From Vienna River Cruise Review

“The cruise was fantastic. The crew was very attentive, friendly, and professional. Everything was so well organised. The cabins were spacious, and the room was made up for you every day – clean towels were plentiful! The food was fabulous. There was lots of choice, and always very fresh, even for my husband, who has a gluten problem. The excursions were very well organised and most enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise – everything about it was first class.”

Autumn Colours of the Danube: From Vienna River FAQ

Are there medical services on board the ship?

The Spirit of the Danube has at least one trained first aider for guests who may be taken ill during their holiday. If you are on regular medication, writing down your medicines and dosage and keeping them in your cabin in case a staff member needs to refer to them during your holiday can be useful.

What are Gentle Walker Groups?

At Saga, we grade shore excursions based on their activity level, so you’ll always know if a tour suits your requirements. Walking tours graded 4 or higher will always be partnered with the option of a Gentle Walker group. Gentle Walker groups follow a different route and avoid inclines, stairs, and long flights of steps. They also take a slower pace. Guests are free to join Gentle Walker groups at any time.

When is the balance payment due for my cruise?

The final payment for your cruise is due no later than 90 days before your departure date. Pay by card over the phone or online via the website by clicking on ‘Manage My Booking.’ For your security, Saga does not keep card details, so we won’t automatically take the final payment. You can use a different card from the one you used for the deposit.
