San Juan (Puerto Rico)

The capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan
is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean and home to a third of
all Puerto Ricans. Nearly every visitor to the island arrives at
San Juan, many on cruise liners. It's one of the largest home-based
cruise ports in the world, hosting many vessels with more being
added each year.

San Juan is divided into three distinct
districts: Old San Juan, the historic walled city; the beach and
resort area; and the outlying suburbs. Tourists mainly visit Old
San Juan, the site of most restaurants, shops, entertainment venues
and some exquisite beaches.

The old city is linked to the new by the
largely residential barrio of Puerta de Tierra and a series of
modern highways leading to the Condado beachfront, which is
reminiscent of Florida's Miami Beach with its high-rise hotels and
apartment blocks.

financial mills grinding in San Juan. The city is an important
centre for petroleum and sugar refining, brewing and distilling,
and the manufacturing of cement, pharmaceuticals, metal products

Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke

Great Harbour is a stunning and tranquil bay located on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Marigot

A delightful mixture of France and the Caribbean, Saint Martin's capital city of Marigot is cluttered with shops and houses serving a permanent population of about 6,000. The town stretches along Marigot Bay, its main focus being the harbour at the bottom of Rue de la Republique from where ferries depart to surrounding islands and fishing boats come and go.

Originally a tiny fishing village, Marigot became the capital of Saint Martin during the sugar boom and quickly grew. Marigot's buildings are largely colonial in style, sprinkled with several smart cafes, bistros, pastry shops and luxury boutiques reminiscent of mainland French market towns. There are also several colonial landmarks, including Fort St Louis.

The main shopping centre in Marigot is at the southern end of the town near the harbour, which is a paradise for shopaholics, with boutiques stocking the latest designer fashions and jewellery, all tax-free. More adventurous shoppers will enjoy browsing the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets, located in a kiosk area near the port.

Saint John Island

The smallest of the islands, two thirds of
St John consists of a national park, a peaceful and largely
unspoilt paradise for nature lovers offering pristine forests,
hidden coves and coral reefs, as well as secluded white beaches and
miles of hiking trails.

Danish immigrants were the first settlers
and became extensive producers of sugarcane. Today, the abandoned
18th-century plantations scattered about the island provide a
reminder of its agricultural industry. A walk around the ruins of
the Annaberg Sugar Plantation offers a historical glimpse of St
John, boasting magnificent views of the British Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Island National Park offers
numerous guided or independent hiking trails into the interior with
stunning views from the ridges. There's a variety of flora and
fauna, including wild cats, hummingbirds and iguanas.

Of the dozens of beaches, the most popular
is Trunk Bay. It's one of the world's most photographed spots,
offering swimming and excellent marine life in the protected reefs.
There is also an underwater snorkelling trail with signs
identifying the types of coral and its inhabitants.

The centre of activity on St John is Cruz
Bay, a small town offering speciality shopping, lively bars and
delicious cuisine, as well as jeep rental services and dive
centres. There is limited accommodation on the island so make sure
to book well in advance.

Saint Thomas

St Thomas is the second largest and most
sophisticated of the Virgin Islands, serving as an extremely
popular port for cruise ships. There's a strong Danish influence,
especially evident in the main town and capital of Charlotte
Amalie.

Being the most accessible of the islands
also means it's the most heavily developed, with visitors from
around the world attracted by the town's reputation as an
international shopping and cruise hub.

But it's also beautiful, with numerous
headlands, coves, and forested hills providing stunning vistas over
the Caribbean. St Thomas also has some of the best white-sand
beaches in the region: Magens Bay Beach is acclaimed as one of the
finest in the world, and the sparkling waters and coral reef of
Coki Bay are superb for snorkelling. Fabulous panoramas can be
viewed from Drake's Seat, a high point in the centre of the island
from where Sir Francis Drake used to watch for enemy ships.

Combining natural beauty with first-rate
amenities, St Thomas offers numerous activities on and off the
water, fine international cuisine and a variety of accommodation
including luxury hotels and villas.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Known as the 'Venice of America,' Fort Lauderdale is a city of
islands, built on a network of canals, rivers, bays, and waterways.
With 23 miles (37km) of beaches, this is a popular stop for cruise
ships in Florida. This sophisticated yet casual resort town
situated in the heart of the Gold Coast, attracts families and
couples from all over the United States, and beyond.

Boating is a favourite Fort Lauderdale pastime, as is cycling,
or simply strolling along the beachfront promenade. Near Fort
Lauderdale, divers can enjoy one of the only living coral reefs in
the United States accessible from shore. There are sporting
facilities galore throughout the city, particularly the world
renown golf courses.

Those in search of culture will be captivated by the Broward
Center for the Performing Arts, the Florida Grand Opera, the annual
Film Festival, and numerous art galleries and museums. Fort
Lauderdale's downtown shopping street is the broad avenue of Las
Olas along the river, lined with fashion boutiques, art galleries,
restaurants, and sidewalk cafés. Diners are supremely well catered
for, with more than 3,500 restaurants covering greater Fort
Lauderdale. These range from intimate cafés to al fresco waterfront
terraces, quaint bistros, and ethnic eateries to cosy steakhouses.
As with most of Florida, the local treat is fresh seafood.

Fort Lauderdale's facilities and attractions will please any
visitor on holiday, and if that is not enough, the exciting city of
Miami lies only 40 miles (64km) away, perfect for a day trip.
