Cruise Review: India’s Golden Triangle & The Sacred Ganges

3 Jan 2025

Thinking of exploring India in style? Rachel, one of our amazing cruise consultants, recently set sail on the incredible Ganges Voyager II, soaking up the beauty of India’s Golden Triangle and the sacred Ganges.

Her adventure was so inspiring that even Susan Calman is following in her footsteps!

Curious to see what all the fuss is about? Don’t miss Part 1 this Friday at 9 pm on Channel 5. Meanwhile, here’s Rachel’s unforgettable journey – packed with stunning sights, rich culture, and plenty of travel tips!

Day One

Touchdown in Kolkata after a breezy overnight flight from Manchester (via Dubai, of course – Emirates always knows how to keep it classy). Stepping off the plane, we were whisked away in true VIP style by our Uniworld guides to the Ganges Voyager II.

Let me tell you, this ship is stunning. Think classic Indian elegance meets modern luxury. From the spa to the games room, it’s got everything you didn’t know you needed. The welcome? Oh, just your casual ‘red carpet’ moment. And don’t even get me started on the service – shoes cleaned after every outing? Yes, please!

We spent the afternoon soaking up the Ganges vibes, enjoying a delicious lunch, and exploring the ship.

By evening, it was all about relaxing and getting the lowdown on tomorrow’s adventures.

Day Two

Up bright and early for sunrise yoga on deck – because why wouldn’t you start the day stretching under a golden sky? After a breakfast fit for royalty, we hopped on the tender to Chandernagore.

This charming little town has a quirky mix of French colonial flair and Indian heart. A highlight? Visiting the 19th-century Sacred Heart Church, where we were lucky enough to catch a service.

Wandering the streets, we felt like celebrities; the locals were so warm and welcoming. Bonus points for the cheeky monkeys who decided to join the fun!

Later, it was tuk-tuk time! We rattled through Mayapur, a hive of energy and spirituality.

Millions of Hare Krishna devotees flock here, and it’s easy to see why. Walking through the bazaar was sensory overload, with vivid colours, rich aromas, and an atmosphere that buzzed with life.

Back on board, we wrapped up the day with cocktails, an authentic Indian music performance, and yet another mouthwatering meal. Bliss.

Day Three

Today kicked off with the hustle and bustle of Kolkata’s famous flower market. It’s a riot of colours and scents, with vendors shouting, laughing, and selling their vibrant blooms. Just don’t wander off like I did – thankfully, some friendly locals guided me back!

We also walked across the iconic Howrah Bridge, an experience in itself. After lunch, we explored Kumartuli, where artisans craft stunning clay idols for parades and festivals. Watching them work was mesmerizing, and the cricket-playing kids nearby were a sweet reminder of life’s simple joys.

The day ended on a humbling note with a visit to Mother Teresa’s home and tomb. Peaceful, moving, and a true testament to her legacy.

We also stopped by the Calcutta Rescue NGO, meeting bright-eyed children whose perfect English and warm smiles melted our hearts.

Day Four & Five

Goodbye, Ganges Voyager II; hello Jaipur!

An early flight brought us to the spectacular Oberoi Rajvilas. This hotel is pure magic, with lush gardens and opulent interiors.

The next day, we explored the Amber Fort and Jaipur’s vibrant Pink City. Every turn revealed a story, every guide shared a gem of wisdom. Rajasthan’s charm? Absolutely unmatched.

Day Six & Seven

Agra was next, and wow, it didn’t disappoint.

The Oberoi Amarvilas spoiled us with rooms overlooking the Taj Mahal. Yes, that Taj Mahal. Seeing it at sunset from a golf buggy? Cue the goosebumps.

The next morning, we had an exclusive sunrise viewing. Watching the Taj shift colours as the sun rose – it was like seeing a masterpiece come to life. Definitely a ‘pinch-me’ moment!

Day Eight

Our final stop was Delhi, and the city welcomed us with a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and tuk-tuk rides.

We checked into the fabulous Oberoi New Delhi before zipping through the streets on bicycle tuk-tuks. It’s chaotic, it’s thrilling, and it’s so quintessentially Delhi.

We ended this incredible trip with a feast, laughter, and a flood of memories that we’ll cherish forever!
