With a reputation built on elegance, personal service, and an eye for innovation, AmaWaterways stands out as one of the most trusted names in the river cruising industry.
From the storied waters of Europe to the vibrant banks of the Magdalena River in Colombia, this boutique cruise line blends modern luxury with deep cultural immersion.
Family-owned and independently operated, AmaWaterways offers guests more than just a way to see the world – it delivers a way to experience it fully. With smaller ships, regionally inspired cuisine, and itineraries that prioritise exploration and comfort in equal measure, the line is a favourite among travellers who value meaningful, well-paced journeys.
The cruise line continues to innovate with exciting new ship launches that blend cutting-edge design with signature AmaWaterways service, raising the bar for modern river cruising.
Whether you’re a first-timer drawn to the Douro or a seasoned cruiser curious about the Nile or Mekong, AmaWaterways invites you to travel with a personal touch – and a lot more space to enjoy it.
A History of Heartfelt Hospitality
Founded in 2002 by three travel industry veterans – Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst, and Jimmy Murphy – AmaWaterways began with a simple idea: to offer guests a more enriching and comfortable way to explore the world’s rivers.
From the beginning, the brand differentiated itself through design, experience, and heart. Schreiner, known as the “godfather of river cruising,” brought decades of expertise to shipbuilding, pioneering the first-ever twin-balcony staterooms. Karst added the warmth of hospitality that still defines the AmaWaterways experience today.
What started with a few European ships has grown into a global fleet spanning five continents – yet the company has stayed true to its boutique roots. Every decision, from onboard menus to itinerary creation, is still guided by people who care deeply about travel – and it shows.
Where AmaWaterways Sails
AmaWaterways offers an impressively diverse portfolio of destinations, bringing guests to the heart of some of the world’s most iconic and lesser-known waterways. From Europe’s vine-covered riverbanks to the wildlife-rich waters of Africa, every route is chosen for its cultural richness, natural beauty, and immersive potential.
🌍 Europe
AmaWaterways is perhaps best known for its presence in Europe, where it sails the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, Saône, Main, and Moselle. Whether you’re gliding through the vineyards of Bordeaux or exploring the castles of the Rhine, each cruise is designed to showcase the best of the region, with guided excursions, local performances, and even bike tours in select ports.
🌿 Asia
In Southeast Asia, AmaWaterways explores the mighty Mekong River, winding through Vietnam and Cambodia aboard ships like the AmaDara. These itineraries combine cultural discovery with lush landscapes and authentic experiences – from oxcart rides through rural villages to visits to floating markets and historic temples.
🐘 Africa
For those looking for something truly different, the Chobe River in Africa offers a river safari experience like no other. With just 28 guests aboard the luxurious Zambezi Queen, travellers are treated to intimate wildlife encounters, including elephants at the riverbanks and birds in flight.
🌊 South America
One of AmaWaterways’ newest frontiers is Colombia’s Magdalena River. This culturally rich route introduces cruisers to vibrant cities, colonial towns, live music, and the warmth of Colombian hospitality – all aboard custom-designed ships like AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia, built specifically for this region.
🏺 Egypt & The Middle East
On the Nile River, AmaWaterways blends ancient wonders with five-star comfort aboard purpose-built ships like the AmaDahlia and AmaLilia. Guided by onboard Egyptologists, these itineraries offer a deep dive into one of the world’s oldest civilisations – complete with visits to the Valley of the Kings and the temples of Luxor and Karnak.
The AmaWaterways Experience
AmaWaterways isn’t just about where you go – it’s how you get there. Every element of the onboard experience is carefully curated to balance luxury, comfort, and immersion. From innovative ship design to award-winning cuisine, the line consistently delivers an elevated, all-inclusive cruise that feels both indulgent and personal.
🚪 Smaller Ships, Bigger Comforts
With most ships carrying just 150–164 guests (and even fewer in destinations like the Chobe and Magdalena Rivers), AmaWaterways guarantees a sense of space, calm, and personal attention. Staterooms are generously sized, with many offering the brand’s signature twin balconies – a French balcony plus a full outdoor one – for uninterrupted views and fresh air.
🍷 Culinary Excellence
A founding member of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, AmaWaterways treats dining as a highlight of the journey. Meals are crafted to reflect local flavours and seasonal ingredients, with complementary wine, beer, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. Each ship features both a main restaurant and The Chef’s Table, an intimate venue offering a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings.
🧘 Wellness Onboard
Wellness is woven into every AmaWaterways itinerary. Guests can take part in daily fitness classes, enjoy a massage or salon service, or take advantage of the ship’s walking track, heated pool, or even guided bike tours in port. Many ships also feature an onboard Wellness Host, offering yoga, resistance training, and stretching classes.
🎭 Cultural Immersion
From classical music concerts in Vienna to cooking demonstrations in Vietnam and storytelling performances in Colombia, every AmaWaterways cruise is rich with cultural content. Guided shore excursions are included in every port, with multiple activity levels available – so whether you prefer an active hike or a relaxed walking tour, there’s something for everyone.
Meet the Fleet
With over two dozen vessels sailing rivers across Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East, AmaWaterways has cultivated a fleet that’s as diverse as the destinations it visits. Every ship is purpose-built – not only for its environment but for the experience guests expect: space, comfort, and regional flair.
On Europe’s rivers, ships like the AmaPrima, AmaBella, and AmaMagna are favourites for their wide decks, spacious cabins, and polished amenities. The AmaMagna, in particular, is a standout – twice the width of a typical river ship, she offers four dining venues, a full-size wellness studio, and large suite-style rooms that rival ocean cruising.
In Portugal, the AmaDouro and new AmaSintra were built to navigate the narrow bends of the Douro River while maintaining AmaWaterways’ luxury standards. In Egypt, ships like the AmaDahlia and AmaLilia blend Middle Eastern design with modern European features.
Meanwhile, the Zambezi Queen in Africa and custom-built ships like AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia in Colombia showcase AmaWaterways’ commitment to thoughtful regional design, with intimate guest capacities and immersive programming designed to bring the destination onboard.
